I have screamed, yelled, whispered, written and even mentally sent my thoughts across the country via telepathy, but once again I will say it again and this time in very bold letters:
When you are a super talented and gifted boxer you only have two options to go when you get knocked out. You either get up and become a warrior or it's over.
Muhammad Ali got up and became a warrior. George Foreman became a preacher for 10 years.
Roy Jones Jr wasn't just better than everyone he fought he was so much better he rarely lost rounds. He went years without losing a round. He truly was superman. But when Superman got hit with his kryptonite he was never ever going to be the same. When that seed of doubt was planted in his mind RJJ was more interested in not getting knockout as oppose to winning fights. When you have spent your entire career being more physically gifted than anyone and those physical gifts erode you don't know how to react.
It was sad watching Joe Calzaghe play with Roy Jones. It was sad watching Joe Calzaghe taunt Roy Jones they way Roy Jones taunted so many opponents in the past. It was eerie. It was strange watching Roy Jones post fight interview where he seems to be happy to just be standing on his feet. He was virtually shut out by Calzaghe, but in Jones mind his victory was to be not knocked out.
I am under the belief that Floyd Mayweather retired not because he wanted to, but because he was smart enough to know that his skills were slipping just enough that he was about to have his Tarver moment and didn't want to end up like Roy Jones Jr.
What is next for RJJ? Hopefully a swan song fight with Bernard Hopkins and then he can go back to the farm because even though he continues to fight his career has been over for a long time.
