Stephen Curry is Still A Beast

If you are a college basketball fan like me, you're probably jumping for joy now that the endless baseball highlights are over and after a long year we finally get to watch some hoops again. This promises to be a special year...we're all going to bear witness on what will be one of the greatest individual year long performance by an individual college athlete in some time. If you've been watching, you know who I'm talking about...Davidson shooting guard Stephan Curry.

He's averaging 34 pts per game and 8.8 assists, and that's before this evening when he scored 39 pts in a victory over Florida Atlantic. He's doesn't just do this against cupcakes either, as his NCAA tournament performance against Kansas last year and his 44 pts against Oklahoma this year shows. And stats don't tell the whole story. If you're watching Davidson play, you can see that teams are dedicating their entire defensive plan to stopping Curry and yet he's still lighting everybody up.

I wasn't a true believer until the Kansas game last year. I thought with their size and athleticism, Kansas would shut Curry down, similar to the way LSU shut Duke's JJ Ridick down in the 2006 tournament and Michigan State stopped Indiana's Eric Gordon in Big Ten play last year. Shooters can always be stopped, just push up on them, get them frustated, no easy looks, and slowly they'll lose their rythm and start forcing bad shots.

Curry is an exception because he has the swagger to go along with the talent. A lot of players display false bravado, but his confidence appears unshakeable. Most importantly, Curry makes his teammates better. He's averaging 8.8 assists because his teammates are getting easy looks while defenses overload to try to stop him. Not a bad bloodline either, as his Dad, former NBA player Dell Curry, was a sharpshooter in his own right.

For all the haters who bemoan the state of college basketball, this one player could generate the type of buzz that hasn't been felt since Michigan's Fab Five created a revolution. There's a couple reasons, not the least of which is that he is destorying the opposition. He has cross over appeal in part because he has the same build as your average joe at the YMCA. At 6'2", 185 lbs (and that's what he's listed at...no way he's weighing in an ounce over 170) he has a vulnerability that fans can relate to and root for.

Athletes make us all dream about what could be or what might have been, and it's a lot easier to visualize yourself doing the things Stephan Curry is doing because he's not overly tall, not muscled up, doesn't jump out of the gym...he makes a connection with a very wide demographic. For as talented as players like say Shaq and Greg Oden are, it's too difficult for most people to picture themselves doing the same things they are doing. It's just not realistic. They're 7'0" and no matter how drunk I am I can't ever convince myself that I'm sitting in the post and dunking on Yao Ming.

But everyone thinks about dropping dimes from anywhere and everywhere on the floor. Curry may not drive and dunk on you, but he'll shoot a looping floater a la Ice Man George Gervin. Wait and see, I think he'll have a dramatic impact on ratings in this year's NCAA tournament. His games are going to be must see, and look out because this is no fluke. He's a gunslinger, an assassin, and he doesn't care if he's playing Mike Jones or Mike Jordan, he believes that when he shoots the rock the ball's going through the net. And it is.

So buckle up, and let's enjoy a renaissance in college basketball. The only thing I'm worried about is when Dick Vitale calls one of his games and has a heart attack because he's screaming at the top of his lungs about Curry saving college ball. And don't expect him to turn pro early. As great as he is, he doesn't have a pro game at this stage, and I think his Dad will tell him that. College hoops is back! It's awesome baby...with a capital A!!!

Better article than Littal has written lately

Still trying to figure out why I white boy is writing for BlackSportsOnline. Have we ever gotten an explanation for that?

The article is decent but Curry is just a flash in the pan and he won't last 2 years in the NBA

If I shot 30 times a game I would be good to

He is cool in college but will flame out in the pros just like JJ Reddick and Adam Morrison
