NBA vs. NFL - Robert Littal Presents The Infamous BlackSportsOnline

So we're going to hear any day now about how the NFL is a thug league full of criminals, and that they're running the risk of turning off middle America, right? No, you say? So even though their level of criminality, both in sheer numbers and on a proportional level, is significantly higher than that of, say, the NBA, they don't have a problem? Really? That's kinda strange to me. Because you see, the NBA players and NFL players are all getting chosen from the same socioeconomic pool: inner city, rural, some suburbanites, maybe a few rich kids here and there. So if one group gets into a lot more trouble than the other then that should reflect badly on where that group lives, works, and plays, right? No, you say? Wake up silly blogger, you reply? After all, it's common knowledge that the NBA is a culture of thuggery while the NFL just has some, OK a lot, of individuals who make dumb individual decisions. But no, that doesn't reflect on the league itself.

OK, I'm being a real smartass on this one, I know. But I've had it with the double standard. NFL players get in all kinds of trouble throughout the year, even during the season which is supposed to be a sacred as church and never to be defiled with criminal activity, and while they do get their bashing from the media it's always on an individual level. Shoot, the Bengals had eight criminals on their roster a few years ago and all we heard about was how the Bengals shouldn't have brought so many bad guys. You let one NBA player get in any kind of scrape with the law and we'll have phone calls to sports radio, emails to show hosts, and columns written about how the thug life continues to plague the NBA and how David Stern must do something, anything to stop it. Let's not forget that Pac Man Jones got in trouble for acting a fool at the NBA All-Star Weekend, and people actually used the incident as a platform to rag on NBA players and the atmosphere they attract.

Correct me if I'm wrong people, but the worst news about player misconduct in the NBA so far is Allen Iverson missing a practice, and the Stephon Marbury drama in New York. No laws broken, no dead bodies, no wounded victims, no police reports. And yet if you go around asking people which league has more criminals I can almost guarantee you they'll say it's the NBA. I know we're supposed to love football unconditionally and overlook it's flaws no matter what, but this is ridiculous. Imagine if Paul Pierce were to have shot himself in the leg with an unregistered gun? There would be an ESPN panel discussion, an Outside the Lines special, and God knows what else. The league would get demonized yet again, and David Stern would be called to resign in shame.

Anyone care to disagree?

We just got steroids

You're preaching to the choir on this one even though you are very much correct. Unfortunately, the NFL is perceived as the more "corporate" entity and often receive the benefit of the doubt. The NFL is embraced by the mainstream. There are as many white stars as black ones. White people do not have a vested interest in the NBA because they do not have many players who look like them at the forefront of the sport. The same logic could be applied to black people and their lack of interest in the NHL. Because of this, the NBA is looked down upon as a league of "thugs" or whatever derogatory characterization you want to insert. I'm giving broad generalizations, but you get the idea.
