About this college football hiring nonsense. Auburn decides to run Tommy Tuberville after 10 years and 85 wins, largely because he had one bad year (this year a 5-7 finish), Alabama has Nick Saban, and he wasn't a big hit with the boosters and alumni. Even though just three years ago they were 13-0 (of course that season was a year or so after they boosters/alumni tried to get him run). So you would think that if a school is going to get rid of a guy with that good of a record, they'd replace him with either a veteran coach with a good record or a hot assistant who is ready for prime time. So what does Auburn do? They hire Gene Chizik, fresh off a two year stint at Iowa State were he put an awesome record of..............5-19. You read that right, 5 and 19. What gives Auburn? Was Ron Vanderlidin unavailable? Or maybe they couldn't find a real winner like Bill Callahan.
Again, I have no problem when you skip over a qualified Black applicant to get a proven winner, whether it be a big one like Pete Carroll or even just a guy with some success like Houston Nutt. I will never hate on anyone for hiring a winner. But when you skip over qualified guys, like Tuner Gill up at Buffalo, can you at least pick somebody with a winning record? You're telling me that Karl Dorrel isn't better than Mr. Chizik? Puh-leez. So what's the rationale for hiring Chizik? According to an ESPN story he gets along well with the boosters and alumni, is liked by former coach Pat Dye, and is lauded for the job he did as the defensive coordinator there a few years back. That's just ridiculous if you ask me. You were a good coordinator, and weren't winning in your first head opportunity, and now you should be the head coach of a major SEC school that has national title goals? Right..............
This is the equivalent of voting a guy President using the 'I'd like to have a beer with him' test. We see how well that worked out.

This is why the hiring of Sylvester Croom at Mississippi State was such a monumental event. It is very unlikely to occur again anytime soon (with the notable exception of Joker Phillips ascension at Kentucky). The decision makers at these schools, and particularly in the South, are not interested in hiring a minority coach who has paid his dues. The boosters and administration want someone they are "comfortable" with. If that means hiring a nondescript white guy who gets along with the boosters, then so be it. There is no accountability, so these schools will continue to do what they want. Just like owners refused to open access to black head coaches until the NFL adopted the Rooney Rule, the NCAA will ultimately have to do the same thing.
I have been an Auburn all my life. Defending my team in the nastiest debates with bama fans. I proudly wore my orange and blue wardrobe and sported tattoos on cheek but I withdraw my love. My loyalty from the school over this mess and how little us fans were considered! This is a big statement. Its like disowning your family name. I won't be a bama fan. Just going to stick with.
