Santonio Holmes Controversial Touchdown Catch From Ben Roethlisberger..Ref Got It Wrong

Here is the thing about replay. You have to have indisputable evidence to overturn a call on the field. The call on the field was down at the 1 yard line. Now you tell me do you see indisputable evidence?

I have watch the play at least 20 times and I still can not tell you if the ball cross the Goaline at the time he got both feet on the ground. From the blimp angle it appears the ball is touching the Goaline. From the sideline angle it appears more clear that it isn't.

So in that regards if you have two angles (actually there was about 4 angles) showing two different things the call on the field stands.

The ref says one thing that troubles me. He states that he caught the ball with two feet down in the endzone. Which is correct, but it doesn't matter where his feet is at it matters where the ball is at. I truly hope that the ref knew what he was going in the booth for. If not then someone will have a lot to explain to the Ravens why the ref didn't know the rule when he went to review the play.

It was definitely a tough call, but the call on the field should have stood.

*Update*

We have had a ton of email coming in about the interpretation of the rule of what constitutes a touchdown when a receiver clearly has both feet in the end zone like Holmes had. We are attempting to get clarification on the rule. When we do I will run another update. If I was wrong I will state it, so everyone just relax.

*Update #2*

Still lot of confusion on the rule. But we will wait on the official statement from the NFL until then it is just all speculation, but keep those comments coming.

*Update #3*

I got this nugget from Mike Florio at ProFootBallTalk.com who breaks down the specific rule.

The rule is clear. Even if the player's feet are inside the end zone, the ball must at least kiss the plane of the goal line in order to result in a touchdown.

It's spelled out unequivocally in Rule 11, Section 2, Article 1(c), which states that a touchdown occurs when a player legally inbounds catches a ball "on or behind the opponent's goal line."

If this is indeed the rule then once again I stand by my original point that there was not enough visual evidence to overturn the call.

Got it right as far as my picks this weeks are concerned...start ingraving the trophy now Littal.

As long as my teams win in the BSO football pool, it's the right call as far as i'm concerned.

You are the biggest Steelers hater on the planet

We were screwed

Didn't look like he cross the goal to me

The ball was marked on the one yard line...? I think not, even the most biased Raven's fan would concede that "IF" the ball was short it would have been marked well inside the one. Maybe inside 1 or 2 inches. You yourself says that "From the blimp angle it appears the ball is touching the Goaline" There's another quote you might read, and this from the NFL rules book.

Field

1. Sidelines and end lines are out of bounds. The goal line is actually in the end zone. A player with the ball in his possession scores a touchdown when the ball is on, above, or over the goal line.

Sure sounds like 6 to me....

sazifraz45. He provided an update stating they were checking the rules and would admit if there had been a mistake.

I can see why he said "relax"

either way it goes the ravens shouldnt even let the steelers drive down the field on them

Littal, I'm pretty much positive that if a receiver establishes possession with 2 feet down in the end zone it is a touchdown even if the ball doesn't cross the plane. I'm pretty sure the rule book states that very clearly, I just don't know why in every other case the ball has to break the plane. But for what it's worth that IS a touchdown, refs got it right.

The call on the field was over turned correctly. Go to the 38 sec. mark of the recorded play. Pause the tape on the 39sec. part of the tape. This shot shows the ball breaking the plain of the goal line. The rule is the ball must break the plain of the goal. Not cross over the whole goal line. Once the tip of the ball breaks the front edge of the plain it is a (TD).

(sazifraz45) stated (Field)

1. Sidelines and end lines are out of bounds. The goal line is actually in the end zone. A player with the ball in his possession scores a touchdown when the ball is on, above, or over the goal line.

So stop bitching. Steelers won, and are AFC N. Champs.

Author is absolutely right. The ref got it wrong.

Good thing the officiating crew corrected the mistake on review.

Any Ravens fans who focus on this one play (unlike Ray Lewis, to his credit) are rather missing the point.

*Even* *if* the Steelers hadn't scored on this play, the Ravens had already allowed them to drive 90 yards to within a fraction of the goal line, in a game where no TDs had been scored to that point. Without that, nobody would be talking about this so-called controversy.

Oh, and the other commenter is also correct, the call on the field was nowhere close to "down at the 1 yard line."

Maybe a few inches. It would have been very interesting to see if Tomlin would have gone for a victory-or-defeat quarterback sneak, or if he would have settled for an almost-certain FG, and rely on the D to send it into overtime.

I stopped your video at exactly :38 seconds. Sure looks to me like the ball has broken the plane of the goal line and he has it in his hands. Doesn't need to have feet down at that point. Know the rules before complaining. You're telling me this view is not better than the official who made the call on the field who was blocked by the players involved in the play. It's good, we win, move on.....

You posted this on purpose to rile up these die hard Steeler fans didn't you? lol Your not fooling me.

We got screwed seriously not enough evidence

from the official NFL Rulebook on their site:
Field

1. Sidelines and end lines are out of bounds. The goal line is actually in the end zone. A player with the ball in his possession scores a touchdown when the ball is on, above, or over the goal line.

It was, in fact, a touchdown, because Holmes had control of the ball over the goal line. Coleman borked the reasoning for the touchdown.

Frankly, the Ravens D crying about this is about as pitiful a thing as there is in the NFL right now. The refs didn't steal this game from you, Ray. You did when you let the Steelers drive 92 yards.

*The rule is clear. Even if the player's feet are inside the end zone, the ball must at least kiss the plane of the goal line in order to result in a touchdown.

Then how are you not wrong. He was legally inbounds and he caught the ball when he was behind the opponents goal line.

Where does that rule say the ball has to cross the plane?

It says an inbounds player catches the ball or or behind the opponent's goal line. He caught it and he was behind the goal line. Plain and simple.

Gents, what would be the call on a pass from QB to receiver, to one of the side lines. The ball is out of bounds in the air, BOTH feet are inside the field. Is that pass complete, because the ball was received, and controlled, even if the ball is out of bounds? Would it be ruled at the spot both feet leave the field, or where the ball hits the ground?

The pass from Ben to Santonio is odd, because usually the receiver is outside the goal area - end zone. Plus the ball does break the goal line plane.

Anyway, the best option for Ravens would have been to clearly win the game, so that this wouldn't be an excuse of why they did not win...

Respectful regards to the Ravens team. GREAT GAME LAST SUNDAY!!!
