By now you know what Plax has been charged with and that he is in some deep deep trouble especially when the mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg is presuming his guilt which goes against everything our legal system stands for.
I understand the mandatory sentence for carrying an illegal handgun in New York is 3 ½ years. I also understand that too many people are injured and even killed by people possessing guns. As a whole I think the amount of guns in our country licensed or not is one of the reasons we are such a violent society and why we have some much crime. I think it is one of the reasons we have so many young people die well before their time. I truly wish we had better gun control laws.
Now with that being said it would be ridiculous if Plaxico Burress had to spend 3 ½ years in prison for shooting himself. I know people who haven't spent 3 years in prison for shooting other people much less shooting themselves.
I know the law is the law, but let's use some common sense. This has nothing to do with Plaxico being a professional athlete I would feel this way about any person. Should they be punished for carry an illegal handgun most definitely, but if they have a clean record and no history of violence there is no way they should spend 3+ years in prison. On top of that if it is proven they had no intent to harm someone that sentence should be a lot lighter.
I don't know what Plaxico's intentions were. If it is proven he was carrying to do criminal intent throw the book at him, but by all reports even the police report states he was just fumbling around (pun intended) with the gun when it went off. Honestly is that something that warrants 3 ½ years?
What it appears to me is happening is similar to Michael Vick the New York Police Department and the Mayor are trying to use Plax as a poster boy for their gun control policy. Because if the NYPD will prosecute the player who score the winning TD in the Super Bowl what do you think they will do to you?
Plaxico is an idiot we have establish that. He has shown he is more about himself than the team, so if the Giants and/or the league decided to suspend him I would not have any problem with that. But 3 ½ years in jail is too much for just being a selfish dummy and if you have any common sense you would see that too.

I was thinking this too, but the law is clear and unlike Michael Vick where there were other people involved Plaxico did this all by himself.

This is real talk Rob you should be on ESPN not punk ass Steven A Smith. I have read a lot of stuff about Plaxico and you have been the only one that have made sense. You have pointed out how stupid Plaxico was and you have also pointed out how it would be an injustice if he did hard time. The whole time you were fair to all parties involved. I hope you get that big break soon you deserve it over a lot of these Uncle Toms out there.
The Michael Vick reference is valid here if you think about it. Michael Vick was made the poster boy against animal cruelty even though there was a whole ring of people involved and now the New York police department along with the mayor is salivating, hoping to make Plaxico the poster boy against illegal posession of a firearm. Doesn't take rocket science to figure that out...and why do you think that is? Hmm 3 1/2 years for leaving your safety off and accidentally giving YOURSELF a kiss with a bullet? I don't think so
