First, I will assume there are very few collegiate hockey fans that read this site. With that in mind, allow me to put this in context.
Let's start by saying there is NO fighting in collegiate hockey. That is what will help you understand just how bad this is.
Michigan defenseman Steve Kampfer missed the first 16 games of this season due to a fractured skull from a vicious off-ice assault from at least one of the Wolverine football players October 12, 2008.
Fast forward to Saturday night in Ann Arbor, where rivals Michigan and Michigan State squared off in one of the better college rinks to see a game, Yost Ice Arena. Kampfer lined up and landed a hard, but legal hit on Spartan forward Corey Tropp. Tropp's teammate, freshman forward Andrew Conboy reacted in a very sick way, reminiscent of Todd Bertuzzi's sucker punch on Steve Moore a few years ago, and the results look the same...

After watching the video, please check out how similar what Conboy did to Kampfer (knocking him completely unconcious) is to the Bertuzzi incident. What actually makes it worse is what Tropp did - slashing Kampfer in the head/shoulder area while he is knocked out! On top of that, Kampfer's father, Bruce, was able to get to the Spartan lockerroom unchecked and confronted Tropp before the end of the game.
Well, the hammer came down swiftly, as Michigan State suspended both Conboy and Tropp for the remainder of the season. On top of that, Conboy dropped out of Michigan State, despite the possibility he could come back next year to the team.
As for Kampfer, he's a tough (but seemingly cursed) kid, and will either skate in practice Tuesday or Wednesday, in anticipation of playing this weekend against Notre Dame.
This is why fighting is dangerous in hockey. It's not that I do not like the fighting in the sport, but emotions run high, and people want to protect their teammates, and those same emotions make people do some very stupid things. I agree with MSU's punishment of both Conboy and Tropp, but something must be done to curb this sort of violent outburst, so no one in the future gets hurt.

This is why i would never let my kids watch or play hockey. I actually dont have anything against the game. But kids that play a sport have to look up to the collegiate and pro atheletes of their sport. The problem i have with hockey is that it condones thuggish behavior. Hockey has a culture of vengence and payback. In comparison to the big 3 sports hockey suffers from a low level of sportmanship so much to where every single person I have ever met that watches hockey all agree that the fights are the best part. So what does it say about the culture of the atheletes when the the fans look forward to the fights more than they do the game. Yes football is violent, and basketball can be as well as baseball. Yet hockey is the only sport where they will actually stop the game to allow 2 supposedly professionals duke it out like 8th graders. And their only consequence is time in the penalty box, and sometimes a 1 game suspension.
This is EXACTLY why you should allow fighting in hockey. Sucker punches and cheap tactics like that do not go unpunished in the pros. I love college hockey, but they should take off the masks and allow these guys to settle the score on the ice. If fighting, or self policing, those two animals from Michigan State wouldn't have made it off the ice. And the next time someone thought to try and pull a cheap shot, they would think twice. For the record, I played against Michigan State in college, and they have always been a bunch of cheap shot artists....

I know that this is about the hockey fighting and stuff, but that's not what I'm concerned with. What is up with the football/hockey rivalry?? What is up with the football players beating up hockey players at michigan state and michigan?? I certainly hope that doesn't happen here at Miami of Ohio (where I am a student.)
