FBS 7, Ivy League 2: Black Coaches in NCAA Football

First, let us all congratulate the now-former Jacksonville Jaguar defensive assistant Tom Williams for becoming the first black head coach in Yale history.

For those counting, Williams is the second black head coach currently coaching in the Ivy League, joining Columbia's Norries Wilson.

Does it stand to reason the Ivy League -- with its reputation of being more intelligent than the average grouping of schools, and now with 25% of the football coaching fraternity being of color -- is making the trend toward more black coaches faster than the FBS (formerly Division I)?

More after the jump...

In the 137 year history of Yale football, Williams becomes the first black head coach. Wilson was the same for Columbia. Maybe you've never heard of either of them, but you may have heard of Florida's defensive coordinator Charlie Strong, passed over (infamously) for the Auburn head job because, as he believes, he is married to a white woman.

Williams is proud of his accomplishment, as should we all, and applauds Yale and its legendary coach Carm Cozza for making the dream possible.

From the Associated Press:

"Athletic director Tom Beckett said the university was proud of the appointment, noting Yale has been playing football for 137 years, but added that Williams' race was not a factor.

"We wanted the best coach and the best leader that this university could possibly find and bring to New Haven and we did that," Beckett said.

Williams said he looked forward to the day when a coach's race doesn't matter.

"Movement is glacial. It's happening, but it's glacial," Williams said. "And I'm proud to wear that banner for African-American coaches.""

So, the Ivy League has it right (or getting there with two of eight...), and the FBS has it wrong, as there are only seven black head coaches of the 119 Football Bowl Series members.

Will there come a day where the FBS members become embarrassed over their continuation of the old-boy network, or will they finally, as Laurence Fishburne's character in 'School Daze' said at the very end, "Wake Up?"

Good for them. I honestly thought IVY league schools would be slower to intergrate because of their affluent nature but this is a positive sign

Is it true the brother from Florida can't get a job cause he has a white wife?
