Over the past couple of years, this idea has picked up steam as the Hall of Fame nominees are introduced. It has garnered even more attention now that the Arizona Cardinals are motoring through the playoffs. I know this may be a touchy issue, but it needs to be addressed.
Many people feel as though he should be inducted based purely on his actions alone regarding this country. He turned down a long term contract from the Cardinals so that he could enlist in the armed forces. However, before that he turned down a multi- million dollar contract from the St. Louis Rams in order to show his loyalty to the team that drafted him for less money. I can for the record say that the NFL needs more stand up men like Pat Tillman, but I for one do not believe he belongs in the Hall of Fame.
You can't put Tillman in the Hall of Fame as a player simply because he was a good, but not great player. Now if the league wants to create something more than the memorial in the Hall of Fame for Pat, I am all for it. It could be some kind of special category or award in honor of him I am sure that could be done. I think because of what he gave up to go and serve his country that would be a good idea. Just as long as it is made clear what made him and his case special; not that he was among the greatest football players, but that he was among the greatest persons associated with pro football.
I totally can understand where those are coming from in regards to Tillman being enshrined in Canton, I really do. On the flip side of that, you have to ask yourself if Tillman would have continued playing in the NFL and never chose to join the Army would Pat even be considered for the Hall of Fame? I mean sure he was an all out player and a great leader for his team, but so were countless other NFL players.
The Hall is supposed to be based solely on the field accomplishments. And what is done negative or positive off the field is not supposed to come into play.
I would love to hear where you, the readers stand on this one.

Im sorry but..i had him on my fantasy football team 2 years str8 ..10 to 13 tackles a game ,he would have been one of the best DB's ...counting what he did off the field,he must of had a big heart,we need more MEN like that..........have a heart let him in .ps its bums in the hall of fame that dont belong.
First he played four years, second tackles weren't tracked before 2001. In 2001 he averaged 8 tackles a game. Tackles are some of the most meaningless, inflated stats in the sport. He had three career interceptions, no touchdowns 2.5 sacks. To suggest that he was even average, on bad Cardinal teams is way off the mark.
Great guy, unbelievable sacrifice that he made, that I could never make.
Bottom line he was average to below average. HOF is for on the field performance. You can't put him in the HOF like the greats.
All we keep hearing is how on the field accomplishments bring people into the hall of fame. How many rushing yards did Ralph Wilson have? Tex Schramm is in the hall for being a team administrator for multiple teams. It is not about on the field performances, but helping the overall view of the league. Pat Tillman made an unbelievable sacrifice but also showed what it is to be a team player. I won't say his numbers should put him in the Hall. However, the example he set as a human being is exactly what the NFL continues to try and promote through the multiple organizations they support. Tillman deserves the Hall and it won't take away from the accomplishments of those that made it for on the field heroics. I guarantee all of the greats that are wearing the coat would have no issue with giving him space in Canton.
