How Do We Remember Tony Dungy???

tdungy.jpg

I think we can all agree that Tony Dungy is a very good guy. I never heard a player or anyone in the NFL say anything negative about him. We also can agree that he is a very good football coach. Anyone who makes it to the post season ten years in row has to be. In case you forgot when he took over the job in Tampa Bay they were the laughingstock of the league. They were the Detroit Lions and he made them respectable and contenders. Even though Jon Gruden won the Super Bowl with the Bucs it was without question Dungy's team. He finally won a Super Bowl of his own in Indianapolis exercising both he and Peyton Manning's demons of not being about to win the big game. So with the announcement that he is heading off into retirement why do I feel like he didn't accomplish as much as he should have?

I compare the Dungy Bucs/Colts tenure to the Bobby Cox tenure where yes they won a championship but they had so many dominate teams in the back of your mind you feel they should have won more. Not that winning one championship is something to discount just asked Marv Levy if he rather have one championship as oppose to four championship appearances. How would Dan Marino be remembered if he won just one? But Dungy's Bucs and more specifically his Colts team were so dominant during the regular season you just wonder what was that missing component that didn't allow Dungy to be a multiple time champion.

Because Dungy is such a nice guy he was rarely criticized in the media for playoff failures which included many home playoff losses. Considering the media blitz society we are in he has stayed above the fray, but in the end how do we define his legacy?

It is a tough question but in the end I think he will be remembered as a very good coach who in the end will be hailed for the things he did off the field more than what happened on it. I think deep down Dungy would prefer to win or lose his way than the go out at all cost way that many coaches employ (hint hint I might be referring to a certain hooded coach in New England). He is the reason that many African-American coaches have gotten their chance as NFL head coaches. His success cannot be understated in regards. Just the doors he has opened is something every African-American head coach and assistant should be grateful for.

So while we wonder if he could have done more on the football field in the end as Frank Sinatra he did it his way and it was successful in ways that go far beyond the final score of the game he loved so much.

Great great man, but choked a lot of big games. he and manning

Tony Dungy was a great coach and a greater man. He should be heralded as a offensive genius. However, the thing that got him to the mountain top was Bob Sanders. When we had a healthy Bob Sanders with a health Dwight Frenney he had Gold.I think that if he would have had this tandem healthy and playing to their potential during the last couple seasons the colts would have won another Superbowl. Injuries to key players should not tarnish his legacy, but this is a issue that no good or bad coach is immune to. All we see is the stats and not whats missing from the equation.Regardless to what is missing, the common factor in Tampa and Indianapolis success if Tony and that is what I will remember.

Dungy was the greatest coach of this era.

NFLDN, you wouldn't consider Belichick the best?

I hate Belicheck but he is the best just considered what he did this year without Brady

Hey, if they can put Marv Levy in the HOF then Tony should get in.
