Is anyone really surprised by Shane Mosley's performance against Antonio Margarito? I've been watching Sugar since his days of thunder in the lightweight division. But can you really be surprised of his dominance of the king of the welterweights who has a granite chin, Antonio Margarito? What about his body though? Shane Mosley put on a boxing clinic tonight starting with excellent work to the body and sense enough to tie up with the then champion when they got close. Several times it seemed as if he would end the night early. And eventually he did with the fighter whom NOONE has ever seen in trouble like that.
The fight began in controversy as the California State Athletic Commissioner ordered that the Margarito camp retape his hands when they found a foreign substance that hardens when wet or perspired on. Similar and ironic to the controversy that surrounded his label mate and middleweight legend Bernard Hopkins (who's trainer, Naseem Richardson, is also Shane Mosley's for the fight) for his virtuoso performances against Kelly Pavlik and Felix Trinidad who were both undefeated knockout artists. Richardson was also in the corner for both of those fights.
Mosley came to the ring with that great smile, T.I. and Rhianna's chart topping song, my life, and to an array of boos. The predominantly Mexican and Latino crowd cheered their champion and willed him through 7 rounds of hell. Something strange happened in the beginning of the 8th though; I noticed Margarito backing up for the first time. But in the end of the 8th Mosley unleashed a right hook that made me jump out of my seat because it was unlike the hundreds of others he had thrown. This sent Antonio Margarito crashing to the ground. In the corner Margarito was asked several times if he could continue and he confirmed that he could. I didn't believe he could. And as the 9th round opened Shane Mosley picked up where he left off as he landed combinations of power shots that led to the referee stepping in calling a halt to the fight. At the time of the stoppage Mosley had won every round on the scorecards, including a 10-8 8th round and the knockout round. Also that same right had changed the course of the welterweight division as it opens up for a showdown (you will hear it first from me), Mosley vs. Pacquiao or even bigger, Mosley vs. Floyd Mayweather.
I've followed Shane Mosley through the good times and the bad. I can honestly say that this is finest performance of his illustrious career. Count his age, 37. Count his years of battles with Vernon Forrest, Oscar De La Hoya, Fernando Vargas, Ricardo Mayorga, Luis Collazo, Winky Wright, and Miguel Cotto. Count the controversy surrounding him the last year or so with BALCO, firing his father and long time promoter Jack Mosley, and divorce with his wife/ former manager. Count the fact that instead of that being used as a crutch, it became fuel to his fire to take back his welterweight crown he got from Oscar De La Hoya 9 years ago. And it all adds up to 1 thing, Mosley is one of the greatest little men of all time.
