Study: Gear Led to Korey Stringer's Death

Growing up in Chicago (you'll have to excuse me for that), and being a Bear fan (I know...bad team...), it didn't really stop me from realizing that former Ohio State Buckeye and Minnesota Viking left tackle Korey Stringer was one of the biggest and baddest men on the planet. I admired him from afar.

When he died August 1, 2001, my heart dropped. How could someone so young and vibrant pass away during two-a-days? We may be finding out very soon.

More after the jump...

The federal lawsuit filed on behalf of Stringer by his wife, Kelci, has picked up momentum in recent months, thanks to a study done researching the helmet and pads worn by Stringer the day he died of hyperthermia.

Riddell made the helmet and pads, and the equipment is being accused of being "defectively designed" and "unreasonably dangerous" and should have included warnings about the danger of wearing it on hot days.

Everything has to do with heat retention. Here's what part of the study, done by Lawrence Armstrong, a professor of thermal and exercise physiology at the University of Connecticut, reveals:

"Armstrong had 10 men ages 19 to 34 exercise in a hot environment wearing either shorts and sneakers, a partial football uniform excluding helmet and shoulder pads, or a full uniform that included Riddell shoulder pads and helmet from 2001.

Each participant wore each outfit once while lifting boxes and walking a treadmill for up to 80 minutes.

The core temperatures of those wearing the full uniform rose nearly three times as fast as those wearing shorts and sneakers when walking on the treadmill for 20 to 40 minutes. Armstrong concluded that the helmet and shoulder pads caused 43 percent of that temperature increase.

Using that data, he projected that if the test subjects in full uniform had exercised for two hours as Mr. Stringer had, their core temperature would have reached 107.6 degrees. Mr. Stringer's temperature the day he was hospitalized was 108.8 degrees.

"I conclude that the helmet and shoulder pads were substantial contributing factors to Mr. Stringer's hyperthermia and ultimate death," Armstrong wrote in his report.

Attorneys for Riddell and Mrs. Stringer also declined to comment. Riddell has until Jan. 19 to file a reply to the court documents that detailed Armstrong's study.

In the same lawsuit, Mrs. Stringer is suing the NFL, claiming that the league should not have approved equipment that wasn't safe. Minnesota courts threw out her wrongful-death lawsuit against the Vikings and some of its employees in 2005."

Kelci Stringer's suit against the Vikings can be refiled, depending upon the outcome of this federal lawsuit, but this could go a long way toward changing the way pads are made, and possibly the way football is even played.

I had always heard he was struggling mightily before he finally collapsed. In my opinion the Vikings are to blame.

I thought this was seetled out of court?

Check out the H.O.T. system. Its a heat monitoring device that sits in a football player's helmet, and relays temperature wirelessly to a PDA. Has been featured on CNN, Associated Press, and other news stations. Visit hotheadsports.com and DEFEAT THE HEAT!

Other states typically cover new cars, small trucks and vans in their car lemon law. Some are conditional when it comes to recreational vehicles, motorcycles and motor homes.
