There was a point in time where the Heavyweight Champion of the world was the most important and most recognized person in sports. Obviously that day has long gone. There was a point in time where the fights meant more than a winner and a loser, they had political supremacy on the line. Obviously that day has long gone. There was a time where fighters fought and we all watched. That day has gone. With big money fights not living up to expectations and the alphabet soup of boxing destroying the credibility of the word Champion, 2009 looks promising. But we cant forget that boxing hasn't broken it's promises to us before.

The world of MMA as all but taken over the spotlight boxing once held claim to,(the little appeal it did have). How you ask? Simple. There is ONE champion. There isn't 5 different sanctioning bodies with different champions that refuse to rank the others champion in their top 10 to unify the belt. There is 1 UFC champion. Their champion fights the number 1 contender and can not duck or dodge the inevitable. No money slid under the table (with the exception of the Kimbo Slice debacle). Their athletes are celebrated and MMA fans know who they are. The average boxing fan has no idea who Andre Berto, Nate Campbell and Joshua Clottey are. The average MMA fan knows who Rashad Evans and Anderson Silva. And all 4 are champions!

2008 was 3 good fights away from being pathetic (Thanks Roy, Calzaghe, Pavlik, and Oscar for nothing). If it weren't for Kendall Holt vs. Ricardo Torres, Miguel Cotto vs. Antonio Margarito, and Vasquez vs. Marques it would have been a waste of a year in the sport as far as "big fights" were concerned. Let's hope for the better my fellow boxing fans. The month of January offers us some intriguing fights to start the year off. Sadly we had to say goodbye to telefura boxeo de oro and ESPN's Wednesday night fights. But we can thank our lucky stars that ESPN Friday Night Fights is back because if I had to pay for another PPV I would make the MMA switch also. Starting January 9 undefeated hard hitter Yuriorkis Gamboa (12-0, 10 KOs) fights Roger Gonzalez (27-2, 18 KOs) in what should be a good start for the year, FREE. If you still dont know who Andre Berto is you'll get your opportunity January 17th on HBO, FREE as the dynamic welterweight defends his WBC crown against he crafty veteran Luis Collazo. Rounding out the month with a fight I've waited 3 years to see. The legendary Sugar Shne Mosley goes for the recognized welterweight title against paper champion Antonio Margarito. It's a excellent FREE month of boxing with several other good bouts with fighters you never heard of but should check out anyways.

New year, lets try some new fighters. Let's let Roy Jones, Joe Calzaghe, Antonio Tarver, Evander Holyfield, Haseem Rahman, Ricardo Mayorga, Oscar De La Hoya, Vernon Forest, Floyd Ma......... nope i can't diss Floyd, and any other fighter that is way past his prime walk off in the sunset, or limp, whichever one they are doing. And let's start paying more attention to the Andre Ward, David Haye, Chad Dawson, Kendall Holt, Juan Diaz, Isreal Vasquez, and ofcourse the #1 and #2 fighters in our new world of boxing (brought to you by me), Manny Pacquiao and Paul the Punisher Williams. Let's hope for the best and prepare for the worst. Happy New Year

The heavyweight division is ludacris

To be honest, if I tried hard I could probably name 6 champions in boxing. Even though I'm a hardcore MMA fan, I still look at boxing when something interesting is going on.

Boxing is great except for the heavyweight division
