Successful college football and basketball coaches make a lot of money. Do they deserve it? In some instances yes, in others no. But is it really that outrageous that many of them get big salaries? I don't think so. The Jim Calhoun press conference incident that happened a few days ago has really shined some light on this. I know Calhoun was harsh with the 'reporter' asking him stupid questions about his salary, but in my opinion the dude deserved it. For those who haven't heard, the guy asked Calhoun in a post game press conference whether or not he'd give up some of his salary due to the recession that the whole country that we're in right now. Calhoun got pissed, told him no, then the guy went off on his attempt at gotcha journalism by asking the coach if $1.6 million was enough money. Calhoun told him that he made more than that, that he should shut up and get some facts, and that the UConn Basketball team brings more than $12 million a year to the university. Now I've heard Calhoun get praised for going off on the guy, and get ripped for it. I'm in his camp.
People don't realize just how much coaches bring to the universities when they are successful. For all his flaws, Bobby Knight always donated major portions of his endorsement/speaking income to the schools that employed him (and to libraries and such, not the athletic department). A lot of these guys raise money for all kinds of school related endeavors, and let's not forget that having a successful football/basketball/whatever team gets more kids to want to go to your school for academics and more big money donors/alumni to pony up for research facilities and what not. And that's not to mention the money that successful schools get at the gate, for jerseys, sweatshirts, etc. Having a successful program leads to all of that, and the coach is the ringleader behind any successful program. At the very least, he has to convince good players to come there. And at the most, he or she develops them as players, helps them get educated (again, Knight was always good for that; say what you want about him but his players always graduated), and helps get them ready for life in the real world. The better ones are part instructor, part parent, and part counselor, and not just some guy who gets a big check to win some games.
Is it crazy that in some instances the football or basketball coach is the highest paid state employee? Sure. But maybe when people start camping out all night for tickets to watch the governor or the state legislature to do their job, that will change. Until then, forget it. I always say that if you bring in the money, you've earned your money. Now should the players get paid? in principle yes, but if you want me to listen to your argument, you have to present a real economic model for doing that, not just shout that it's unfair right now. Fire away!
