As an Ohioan and football fanatic, the debate comes up all the time about how the southerners are faster than their Big Ten counterparts. So I wanted to take a closer look at this with the combine and pro days to see if this is true or just a myth.
As far as skill positions this year across the board, it pretty much measures out the same. You have some fast guys in the Big Ten and down South. You have some slow guys in both. I think with this debate, perception becomes reality. Who would of ever thought Beanie Wells would run faster then Knowshon Moreno. Or that Percey Harvin wouldn't run a low 4.3 or Malcolm Jenkins wouldn't run in the 4.4 range.
Honestly, the difference is in the trenches baby. With OL and DL, depending on the climate, you're going to have different lines. With colder weather, you're going to go with the bulkier lines, because sooner or later you're going to have to put a hat on a hat and pound the rock. With warm weather, you can have the smaller DEs with the speed rush, and smaller quicker tackles to stop that rush.
On a side note that's why the bowl games give warmer schools an unfair advantage. Their teams are built for the places that the bowl games are played. Just think what would happen if a SEC team would have to come play the championship game up at Heinz field or Lambeau.

If a top tier SEC team would play in the northeast during bowl season I believe they would still dominate. Yes, I'm a SEC homer, being in and growing up in this atmosphere you can't help but be SEC biased.
I agree 100%. Nice first(?) article. They should play a bowl game in Lambeau too.. that would be insane.
yeah let them come here in January we would kick their ass
I totally agree too. They need to vary the site location's of some of these bowl games. Because I just wonder how these speed conferences would be playing in a game involving snow, cold rain or windchill. I am sure they would go and practice somewhere to get prepared for the games, but I still don't think it would always translate any better for the speed conferences. But I also feel the big ten is going to start adapting its gameplan and focusing on having more speed and agile players, compared to big, heavy, pounding players.
Okay so Ohio State has problems with SEC teams but Michigan seem to beat them, figure that one out! And it is a bit unfair to always hold bowl games in warmer climates, it would make the game a bit more interesting when the weather plays a factor.
Damon i don't know if they'd still dominate but it would be interesting to see because alot of the kids down there haven't ever played in snow. Look at the Michigan Ohio State game a couple of years ago where the field was terrible you just can't go on something like that for the first time and feel comfortable.
To be honest it probably would be a different game. But it's not like the South doesn't really cold, ice, snow and hail either. It's not like we're California kids where if it gets down to 60 we're freezing lol.
I think it would make a huge difference in some of the games. If you have a lot of small speed rushers but the field is trash after a heavy rain or nice snow storm then they won't be able to get the traction they need. Big Ten players are bound to be used to it and know how to play in those conditions. I do find it kind of ironic that Michigan can usually hang with the SEC teams and OSU just can't seem to get hold on them.
