With all due respect to our glorious founder , the Lions would be idiots NOT to draft Matthew Stafford #1. While there is no way to know for sure if a Quarterback will be a superstar or a bust, there is plenty of evidence that the Lions will be a bust until they get a quarterback. When your quarterback roster includes Drew (why didn't Parcells love me?) Henson, Daunte (everything is different without Randy) Culpepper and Drew (I don't deserve a clever aside) Stanton as your QB rotation you have definite need of improvement.
The point was made that because the Lions were an NFL record horrible team last year they shouldn't take Stafford because he is not a consensus #1 pick. I thoroughly disagree with this. You take the player you need and at this point that would be Mr. Stafford. When your team is as bad as the Lions were last year you don't worry about looking worse. Do you really think Amy Winehouse is concerned how she looks these days? (Obviously Not) When you are the ugly girl at the prom you are just happy to be asked to dance, and Stafford has been vocal in asking for that dance. Remember this is the same franchise the Great Barry Sanders retired from in his prime rather than continue to deal with them. If you find ANYONE actually excited to play for you, put him in a uniform as soon as possible. Do you really think that fans would be rushing to see an Aaron Smith or Eugene Monroe? Is that really what you want as the face of your franchise, a $3-5 million Tackle?
While I agree that there is alot of pressure at the Quarterback position in general, I feel that the exception would be Detroit. Pressure to win doesn't exist in Detroit, as evidenced by the torturous reign of Matt Millen. Could any city committed to winning have lasted through the "wonder years" without catching Millen outside of a restaurant and forcing him to leave the state forever? After 0-16 the Detroit fans are merely looking for a Quarterback who can walk upright and talk at the same time. Even if pressure was attempted to be exerted on Stafford, do you really think it could be worse than what he has received as the Georgia quarterback in a football obsessed SEC? For the Detroit Lions, the only choice is Matthew Stafford. As an organization needing a face for their franchise, the Lions must draft the QB.

The writer is an idiot. Every successful franchise is built from the interior lines outwards. Do you know what a QB without protection looks like? Daunte Culpepper with a shredded knee. Build your offensive line with a franchise tackle and work inwards. Drew Brees doesn't throw for 5000+ yards without an above average line.
This clown of a writer is more concerned with how the number one pick looks to the casual fan. All this gibberish about whether fans would pay to see Andre Smith...please! If Smith can keep the OB clean enough to throw a TD, then people will show up regardless of who the "face" of the franchise is. Seriously kid, you need to grow up and talk to a coach so you won't sound as ignorant you appear to be in this article.
I am going to have to agree with Littal on this one. Stafford could be great but Detroit isnt in a position to make a mistake on a maybe prospect.
As San Fran learned just because there is only one quarterback available in the top 10 doesn't mean you have to take at #1 if they aren't #1 quality and Stafford just isn't #1 quality

While I respect your opinion I have to disagree again. We are talking more than X and Os. We are talking about the direction of a franchise. In that context, you have to build fan enthusiasm, especially in light of the Millen era. I agree that the line is vitally important, but my point remains that noone wants to see O lineman. They want to see "stars" and if you don't give them stars they won't come to games. Without the "casual fan" to build interest and purchase your product you have no business. Remember, we are talking about Detroit here, home of some of the worst financial situations in the country. If I'm a die-hard Lions fan who just lost his job, do you really believe I'd be willing to part with the last bit of money I have for the chance to watch a lineman? I don't think fans should run football operations in general, but I do believe that organizations are sometimes forced to consider fan reaction when dealing with players.

I agree the football decision is to take the lineman, but the business decision is to get the fans excited. There is no football without Business.
