Allen Iverson...WTF?

| | Comments (21)
For the longest time, I did not like Allen Iverson. I thought he was just another guard in the league that wanted to shoot, shoot, shoot. He would put points on the floor, yes. He would cross everybody over to the ground, yes. But that's all I saw him as. I didn't see anything else.

Then, he got to the NBA Finals and started playing my Lakers. At that point, the Lakers had not lost in the playoffs, and were on pace to become the first team to be undefeated in the playoffs. Then...Allen Iverson happened. He took over, and ended the game with that infamous jumpshot in the corner, and stepped over Tyronn Lue. Ironically, at that point...I developed an undying respect for Allen Iverson.

Or so I thought.

Fast forward six years later, and here we are. Allen Iverson is on the Detroit Pistons. A lot of people thought this project would work. More so than the Denver project. They said Allen Iverson could fit in. When he came to Detroit, he said he would do whatever it would take to make it work. He knew he had teammates that were on levels close to him, and that he could rely on them to take over during the stretch with him.

But somebody had to come off the bench. Iverson ranted that it wouldn't be him. Coach Michael Curry obliged, and brought Richard Hamilton off the bench. Luckily, before war would break out in the locker room, Hamilton ended up sitting for a number of games due to an injury...a period of time where Detroit was absolutely terrible.

Hamilton returned, and they played well. At some games, Iverson had even been on the bench at the end of the game, watching Hamilton take over the game and lead the Pistons to victory. Allen Iverson credited his teammates and said they played well and won the game for the team...but also chimed in that he would love to be in the game at that point also.

It's the competitor in Iverson, I understand that.

But this recent outburst, was absolutely uncalled for. I know he's one of the best point guards with the ball to ever play this game. He was one of those players that changed the game forever, in the way that he brought that swagger to the game, something we rarely saw before Iverson.

But with your team fighting for the playoffs...you tell the media that you can't come off the bench? Especially including the fact that you have just missed 10 plus games on a back injury, you're still not 100% and you still want to start?

His comments the past few days have left a bad taste in my mouth. Iverson told media this week that he would rather retire than come off the bench. Today, Detroit announced that Iverson will sit out the rest of the season due to his injury. Coincidence? Probably not.

Is that the end of Iverson as a Piston? Most definitely. With that last idiotic rant?

But now...who is going to sign Iverson? Is a contender going to sign a player that's slowing down (not saying he's done yet), and wants to be the man? If they needed that kind of player, they wouldn't be a contender in the first place.

Teams like the Spurs, Lakers, Cavs...teams that may potentially look at Iverson, or teams that Iverson would want to play for...because ultimately, he wants a championship...none of them are going to look to sign Iverson. Not with his attitude. If anything, contending teams will want to bring Iverson in to bring him off the bench. Imagine the Cavs or Magic bringing Iverson off the bench to have two completely different offenses and/or lineups to bring against teams. They would be unbeatable. But no, Iverson can't come off the bench.

Next season...Iverson is probably going to be playing with a team that signed him so they can sell tickets. He will be playing with a lottery team. Or worse...the Clippers.

I thought he cut his hair in February, because it was time for a change, it was time to mature as a person, he said.

Maybe he'll end up in Europe.

Iverson once said that he would do anything to win. I don't know that this mode of operation is what it's going to take to win. I'm waiting for the real Iverson to stand up.
