Paul Pierce...yeah, I don't know what to say. He can make a jumpshot, he can get to hole, but it sure isn't pretty. When you look at his career stats, he's a top guard in the league, averaging just over 22 points eleven year career, has a bunch of All-Star nods, and yes, that championship ring and that Bill Russell MVP of the NBA Finals Trophy.
Towards the end of the season, as Garnett was out due to injury, and Ray Allen took the rest of the year off, Pierce held it down. He was throwing himself into MVP talk because he was a man playing out of his mind. And that, I respected. A player putting the team on his own back and carrying him, that's what somebody like him is supposed to do. But then when you really think about that, isn't that what is expected of him? This is his team, and KG and Ray Ray came here to help him. He should've been doing it in the first place. And when you start the playoffs, already struggling a bit and being hit with a whole bunch of bad news (Garnett and Ainge's heart attack), you expect a leader to come out and shine.
And really...all I can think about was what he said last summer.
He responded with pure genius.
"There's a line that separates having confidence and being conceited. I don't cross that line, but I have a lot of confidence in myself. I am a confident player and a lot of people might look at it like 'Oh, another cocky attitude,' but I don't look at it that way," said Pierce.
"I have an opinion, I have a right to have one and that's the way I feel. I felt I've played against the best over the years and felt right now that I'm the best player in the world."
That was last summer. Granted, it's only two games into the series, and it's 1-1, but Tony Majestic is damn right...The Boston Celtics are in trouble. And good, Ray Ray showed up last night, and it was a battle of UCONN guards...which was probably the best array of back and forth ball I've seen in a while, but where the hell is Paul Pierce? You miss a big free throw in game one, and just kind of shoot your way to 18 points last night.
Like I said...I respect people who have game. And while it's fun to hear people like Ron Artest talk smack to everyone... they back it up. If you're going to tell us you are the best in the world...You have to back it up...for a long time. Sure, Rajon Rondo and Glen Davis put the team on their back and kept the Celtics there (Rondo's stat line of 19, 12 and 16 is unreal.), but if the Celtics are winning this series, or winning another game... "The Truth" has to show up.
It's only two games, but in the playoffs, one game can be the death of you.
i think im the best player in the world too...I'm sure Paul realizes Kobe is the better player but I agree with him when he claims he's the best...I'm sure he has respect for Kobe's game but I think that comment shows the competitive nature in him, that I think every player should have. You're twisting it to claim that he thinks that he in fact is the best, where the underlying message Pierce refers to is about the confidence level he has in himself. And just a side note, let's be real, the celts are really KG's team.

any above average Hooper knows that basketball is "Heavy Mental" (nod 2 Killah Priest)..so after PP wrecked the finals on offense and frustrated KoBe (MJ would never lost the mental edge to PP or the finals...but i would kill to see the new BIG 3 go against MJ, Pippen, and DRodman) on defense and snatched the crown, im sure thats what he felt at the heart and rightfully should say publicly...but in a general context he knows he's not the most difficult check in the NBA..Kobe is right know..but if this season hasnt proved anything to KoME its obvious to the rest of the world, he better see the writing on the wall!!..if LA doesnt get the finals this year the window is closing...Clev, Den, Orl, Mia, all on the rise and waiting for 2010 free agents! so of course Boston being BACK 2 BACK nba champs is looking improbable today but after the ALL Star break this year it looked less likely than last year anyway. You heard it here first though, THE CHICAGO BULLS are NOT gonna eliminate the defending champs in the 1st rd. Everyone will have to wait until the 2nd/3rd, pz
