So I'm cruising the web (I don't surf it anymore, I cruise it now) and I see this piece about Andre Rison creating his own hall of fame. He was asked by the Atlanta Journal Constitution about his football career. The answer is probably one of the best answers I've ever heard. I've heard that all wide receivers have diva tendencies. I didn't know those tendencies stuck well after retirement. Rarely can you define your own legacy, but some do try. Here's the quote:
"Best receiver to ever play the game. I can't show my highlights because I don't own NFL Films, but all my coaches in college, in high school, in junior college, they all told me I could be the best. But they must've lied because that title was already given to Jerry Rice. Just because you have stats doesn't mean you're the best. Can't nobody tell me that Andre Reed isn't better than Jerry Rice. I'm seeing cornerbacks on the 75th anniversary team that I used to demolish. But I'm coming out with my own hall of fame."
Now, I know that some athletes have been known to smoke the wackiest of weeds in their careers, but Andre has been on some other stuff if he truly believes he's better than Jerry Rice. Kids, if you didn't believe your parents, I'm here to tell you that drugs will mess up your brain. I'd be able to accept this thinking from Randy Moss or T.O. but Andre Rison?? Well Andre, I'm here to help you. Jerry Rice is widely regarded as the best to play the game, not because he "demolished" cornerbacks, but because he was basically unmatched in production. He has the stats, he had the work ethic, and he has the rings. Let me say this though, Rison was a competitor and he did win a Superbowl and a Grey Cup. Nevertheless, more people remember Andre because his girlfriend at the time burned down his house. Some will remember him for going to jail on failure to pay child support. Me? I don't know how I'll remember him or if I will at all, but I certainly never thought about him in the top 10 all time receivers. Maybe not even top 20.
There are very few players who are considered among the very best at their respective positions (Barry Sanders comes to mind) even though they don't have the absolute top stats in all categories. Andre Rison had the potential to be legendary. Well, he had hall of fame potential anyway. If I'm not mistaken, he was the highest paid receiver at one point in his career. His downfall, I don't know for sure but I'll guess that he started smelling himself. His confidence crossed into cockiness and that feeling of not being replaceable. He also feels that the Falcons handled him wrong. He thinks he should have been a life-long Falcon. I'm sure most athletes feel that they should only play in one place, and be paid damn well for it too. Can he still play? In his mind "there's no doubt about that. I just came off the basketball court. But everybody doesn't have a Brett Favre situation". Now on that, we agree. Your main mistake was not having a man-love fest with John Madden, at least then we would have heard your name a few hundred times during each game he called.
His post football life has been good. He coaches kids, and he does do a lot for the community. This isn't a bashing article, but I had to say something when I read that. You can't crown yourself the very best in the game. Your achievements, attitude, stats, and overall body of work usually do that for you. Well sometimes the media does their damn best to crown people who don't deserve to be, but I digress. Perhaps he truly believes all that he's saying or perhaps he's trying to generate publicity for a book he's written called "Wide Open". Hey, we all have to make our money somehow.
