Favre should learn how to retire from Rodney Harrison

rodney-harrison.jpgWhile we wait with baited breath to know whether or not his Excellency, Brett Favre, will be unretired yet again I read a piece on www.profootballtalk.com about Rodney Harrison. Harrison recently announced his retirement from the game and he's sticking to it. I don't know if the quote I read was a shot at the Brett, but he said:

"I have respect". "For me, I don't want guys on my team or guys I've played with to have to answer questions about Rodney Harrison's return. When I made my decision to retire, I made my decision to retire. I want to walk away from the game. There is a point in time where we all have to walk away from the game and I just thought it would be very disrespectful for me to come back and forth and not make my decision. . . .

"I never want to be a distraction and I just think that is so fair for the peers throughout the league as well as my teammates for not being distracted by Rodney Harrison. When I made my decision, I am complete with that. . . . Football has been good to me. I've worked hard. I've played hard. I've done some things that I never dreamt I could do and now it's time to move forward to the next phase of my life. I respect people in National Football League enough not to put them on this joy ride -- the back and forth, the ups and downs of am I coming back and will I not come back? I am done and I am always going to be a fan of football."

Breathe that in for a second. He's done, and he's not coming back. That's how you retire, with a definitive statement and a new job if that's what you want. I look forward to following him on TV as he will become an NBC analyst. I hope that he stays as honest as he's seemingly been throughout his NFL career. Quite frankly, I'm not a fan of Harrison, and I don't hate on him either. He played for the Patriots, and I'm an Eagles fan, he contributed to my heartbreak in February of 2005. I have a lot of respect for players like him who know when it's time to walk away before they become a liability to themselves, their team, and the game that makes them rich.

In a day when the media is coddling and giving Favre every excuse in the book when it comes to his waffling and basically holding personnel packages hostage not knowing whether he's going to play or not, I'm glad someone will be joining the media who won't give prima donna players the soft treatment. I know that Fran Tarkenton has been taken to task by most of the media because he came out so harshly against how Favre is trying to make his way to Minnesota, or not. I only disagree with Fran wanting Favre to fail there.

To me, Favre has tarnished his legacy big time. The more he plays this retirement game, the more people will look at his flaws. We were all blinded by Madden and his man-love for everything Favre. People forgave every stupid interception he threw as "Brett just being Brett. He's having fun out there". Well, now people realize that although he's a legend, he's as much a diva as any popcorn eating, sit-ups in the driveway doing, wide receiver out there. But hey, I can't hate too much, Brett just loves him some Brett and the thinks the NFL fan base still wants to see the old gun slinger one more time. If I ever had a chance to talk to him face to face, the only question I'd have for him would be whether he wanted to play for the love of the game, or whether he wanted to play because he has no plans for life after football.

if Harrison was such a cheap shot artist I would take him more seriously. I see his point, but still I won't like him on TV reminds me of keyshawn johnson

Granted, he was known as a dirty player, but we don't know what he'll be like on TV. I think I'll wait to critique him on that. The player could be different from the analyst. As long as he keeps his edge, I'm fien with that.

Rodney Harrison is right on point there and Brett deserves to be getting called out for what he is doing. But of course the biased mainstream media only has love for Brett while they look for things to hate about players like TO and Ocho.
