Go get the Answer!

Allen Iverson

So Cleveland got Shaq, and they're all ready for the trophy, right? Not really. Shaq will help, especially against Dwight Howard and the Celtics front line, but he alone is not enough to cure the Cavaliers' ills. They still need someone in the backcourt who can create his own shot off the dribble against the best players in the league. They didn't get Vince Carter, who I thinking would have been excellent for this, so they have to look at other options. Let me say this: even with Shaq, if they don't fix the backcourt, they're done. Again. As we saw against Orlando, Mo Williams and Delonte West are not a championship backcourt. Williams is probably OK as a starter, but West is better in an off the bench role. So who should the Cavs get? The headline gives my choice away. Allen Iverson is worth taking a chance on. The Cavs are in a one year mode right now; Shaq won't be back after the 2009-10 season unless he takes a HUGE pay cut. So they might as well go all in. Iverson is a free agent this summer, and can be signed to a one year deal. I think that the handwriting on the wall would be a bigger motivation than any desire to take 30 shots a game.

Now I know what the haters are thinking. He won't practice, he takes too many shots, he's too selfish, etc. To which I say: nonsense. If he hadn't uttered the infamous words at the press conference, no one would know or care about his practice habits. And as far as the other things, just look at what he does in All-Star games. When you surround him with great players, he has no problem passing the ball. And remember, for a 'selfish' player he routinely averages six or seven assists a game for his career. But what about the Denver debacle? That wouldn't happen because there's an established hierarchy in Cleveland unlike there was in Denver. He won't be trying to assert himself and not step on the other star's toes at the same time. in Cleveland, Lebron is the boss and everyone knows it. Iverson is fine when there is an established order. He had no problems with John Thompson at Georgetown, who everyone knows was one of the toughest coaches around. The biggest problem in his career, in my book, is that too many people let him do whatever without laying down any kind of law beforehand. When you let people run amok, they tend to do so. That's partly his fault, but not all of it. Blame Larry Brown, Billy King, Goerge Karl and everyone else who waited until after the fact to complain about things they let go without challenge.

OK, that's enough of my Iverson defense. Cleveland fans, just ask yourselves this. Do you want to go into next year's playoffs hoping that West and Williams will magically learn how to create their own shots? Or do you want someone who can still do that in spades? There's your question, and you know the Answer.

uhhh.... no. The problem for the cavs was not thier guards. Thier problem came against big wing players. The backcourt they had was good enough for 66 wins and two first round sweeps. They lost because they ran up against a team who had scroing forwards and the cavs had a scoring forward. AI would not help. Sounds nice tho.

Weak. If you want 90s All Stars then might as well sign Danny Manning and Big Dog Robinson too

Iverson had a great career but he's lot a couple steps and has to rely on a balky jumper. Stick with Delonte West, he's going to have a big year next year.

The only reason to get Iverson is if you want to completely destroy team chemistry. Ask Denver and Detroit how the Iverson experiment worked out.

With the exception of the one year he got to the finals, he's never really been on a winning team.

no one agrees, hahaha.
