I cannot deny I was one of many who thought Derek Fisher was hurting the Lakers more than helping them in the early rounds of the playoffs. I demanded that he be benched in favor of Shannon Brown or Jordan Farmer. When he clang his first five three pointers last night I echo those same sentiments that his permanent residence should be the bench.
Now we know why Phil Jackson has nine more rings (it is about to be ten) than I do. I think clutch is an overused and clichéd word. I think a better phrase would be "pressure handler". How does a player react when the pressure is turned up?
While I describe Kobe Bryant as the ultimate "serial killer", D Fish is more like a "silent assassin" and he pretty much killed any chance of the Magic winning this series.
In a game where Kobe was Kobe (he is still struggling in the 4th quarters surprisingly) it was all of the Lakers who contributed to this win (Every single Laker played in Game 4).
In the end that might be the story of these playoffs that when Kobe was struggling or when he was brilliant his teammates always had his back. In reality that is what being a championship team is all about.
In reality this series should be 3-1 for the Magic. This is the second game they blew. It is one thing to get outplayed, but it is a totally another thing to mentally breakdown and lose a game. There were so many errors made by the Magic that I find it hard to believe any of them slept well last night.
1- They came out flat in the 2nd and were outscored 30-14.
2- They missed 15 free throws. Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkoglu missed crunch time free throws that could have sealed the game.
3- Stan Van Gundy not electing to foul with 11 seconds to play with the Lakers down 3, but that wasn't as bad as.
4- Jameer Nelson's atrocious defense on Derek Fisher game tying three at the end of regulation.
5- Why was Nelson in the game when Rafer Alston had been playing well?
6- Bad execution of the final play of regulation where Mickael Pietrus took the last shot.
7- Speaking of Pietrus I don't know what he was thinking with the double fisted forearm in the back of Pau Gasol. If the leagued suspended Rafer Alston for slapping Eddie House they have to suspend Pietrus correct?
When the Magic lose this series they are going to be haunted by this game and Game 2 for a very long time. They have no one to blame except themselves.
The Magic choked the series away. If they weren't experts at the art of choking they'd be up 3-1 right now. They had a chance to ice the game on free throws and couldn't do it, they don't deserve to be champions. The Magic are the Lakers from last years finals. A center getting beat up in the middle, blowing big leads, having a ton of turnovers, and collapsing in the 4th QTR. Basically they look outclassed in every fashion. When they stop and look back and realize they had a championship in the bag there going to have a chip on their shoulders the size of a boulder. Lakers have this wrapped up now. The Mamba has his ring without Shaq, and proves LeBron still has something growing up to do.
Rob I had been saying the same thing about Fisher the whole playoffs. Last night he proved again why Phil keeps him in the game. Done deal ring for Kobe!!!
