Here is why a lot of people think athletes are dumb. Raul Ibanez was obviously PMSing at the time he began his rant against Jerod Morris of MidwestSportsFan.com. But Morris was correctly writing about how Ibanez's season should be under a microscope because of the "Steroid Era." Ibanez unintelligently refuted this by using a stereotypical statement about bloggers to defend what he believes was a stereotypical article about him.

How stupid can you be? You want people to respect your opinion but you pull the out the whole "mother's basement" card on us. When I say us, I mean bloggers, and specifically...sports bloggers. He might as well have said:
"Your mom has big feet".
It would have been more creative that his laughable attack on us.
First, who in the blue hell is Raul Ibanez to say anything? You are Raul Ibanez. In the grand scheme of things, you should be happy anyone is talking about you.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Jerod's article. It was well written, well thought out and more importantly, it was fair. If it came from SI.com or Peter Gammons, no one would have said a thing, but because it came from a blog, all of sudden, it is being called irresponsible?

If I was Jerod, I wouldn't have apologized for anything. He did an outstanding job collecting facts and reporting an opinion. What is the difference between what Jerod wrote and what Selena Roberts wrote about Alex Rodriguez? Absolutely nothing.
Simply put Sports Bloggers are like rappers back in the 80's. The mainstream doesn't want to recognize us, but the underground knows we are better than the mainstream.
Beat writers, newspapers, mainstream sports sites are deathly afraid of someone like Jerod Morris who isn't scared to write what everyone is thinking.
You keep thinking we are in the basement. Our bank accounts say otherwise.
It is time for people to realize this isn't "Comic Book Guy" running these blogs. We are professionals.

I will tell Raul Ibanez to his face that I think his numbers are suspect and let's see if he decides to puff out his chest out face to face and not like a female who just found out her man cheated on her with her cousin and ran to Facebook to cry about it.
Jerod did the right thing by taking the high road, but since I am just in my mom's basement I don't have to worry about that, so Mr. Ibanez:

That was what I was thinking about him all this time. He should know that older players who start smashing the ball out of the park like it was child's play is always going to be suspect. I can tell you this, he's loved here in Philly. He's so loved here it's not funny. It's a case of Philly fans turning a blind eye to it because he's one of our players. I may catch hate from other Philly fans who read this, but you know it's true.
When he was acquired all the sports talk shows were filled with people wondering why the hell he was brought here. Now, Robert, I swear he has groupies calling the sports shows asking other women to stop buying their size in his Jerseys. I'm not exxagerating.
The irony is... Raul was only speculating about bloggers (living in their mother's basement) just as Jerod was speculating about Raul's hitting (he is so good, he must be using PEDs). You took offense to Raul's comments just like any non-PED using player that can mash the ball would take offense to Jerod's comments.
I'm not sure of the validity in your comparison of sports blogging and 80's rapping - but its pretty creative.

Well, he was the one sorta, kinda accused of using PEDs. So, regardless of the merit of his comments, its not clear to me why he should "know his role and shut his mouth".

Anybody who has followed Raul's career has seen a great citizen, a real professional, and class coming out of his ears.
It's very, very unfair to say things like this, especially to a person who probably felt right at that moment that he was being accused (after years of hard work) of being a cheater.
Was he just a bit out of line? Sure, but he's only human, and he deserves just a bit more benefit before a ruthless attack by the blogosphere.
I agree with much of the criticisms about the MSM but I also agree that bloggers tend to be emotional, reactionary, and unwilling to hold themselves to any sort of de facto standards.
It's disappointing to read posts like this because the bar should be set higher.
