Some time back when car engines had to be manually wound in order to limp down the road, Barry Bonds was a skinny kid, enthralled with Willie Mays, looking up to his father Bobby, and tweaking his god-given talents for the game of baseball. Years later, either loving him or cursing his very name, it's hard for anyone to deny that Bonds is one of the greatest hitters to ever play the game..
In a never-ending ironic match of one-upmanship, the justice system and most of the public have been bashing Barry upside his now-swollen noggin two times for every one homerun hit. That's a lot of speed-knots! Just when you thought the Bonds saga was over and you could focus on Manny being a steroid-injecting Manny, federal prosecutors decided that it's in their best interest to appeal the ruling of tossing out suspected evidence of Bonds' steroid use. This came in on Monday.
Most people's first thought when hearing this is, wow, nothing new. With all the crime in the country, a horrible economy, an unstable atmosphere, and an uncertain future, Bonds is the A-#1 terrorist if you were to ask the obvious Ruth-loving elitists who wish to see him humiliated on a world stage. It's not that Bonds isn't guilty, and it's not that Bonds doesn't deserve to face the music. Deserve has got nothing to do with it. It's the habitual beating of a dead horse that makes these prosecutors seem unfit to be baseball fans, much less have a say in the game's legacy.
Unfortunately for Bonds, prosecutors are pleading their case for evidence reinstatement in the famous-for-being-all-left-wing California 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Susan Illston, the U.S. District Court Judge who ruled all Bonds evidence connected with his personal trainer to be null and void and therefore off limits, made what she thought was the right and lawful decision. But this is America. If you can't complain your way to right in front of one person, you simply go to another. Ain't democracy great?
Who knows what the bleeding hearts will do with the Bonds evidence. The only real important question is: Who cares? Why do these prosecutors see fit to destroy a man who, honestly, broke no real laws? Let's face it; perjury is always suspect as a principle. It's a catch 22 - tell me you're guilty, or else, when we find you guilty, you're perjured! Um, no thanks.
On that big roulette wheel that is life, Bonds can't seem to stop hitting double-zero. Then again, that's how you know the game is American. He could actually win a few chips on the French version.
