Brock Lesnar HW Champ VS. Frank Mir Interim HW Champ
Overview:
This fight was made possible by one UFC Legend named Randy Couture. Lets go back in time:
See, two years ago Randy Couture who at the time held the HW Championship, decided that he was gonna go Diva and not fight for the UFC anymore, yet not retire, and seek a fight with the mysterious dominant heavyweight force named Fedor who was wondering the MMA land. Unfortunately for the UFC, he held the UFC heavyweight belt at the time, and left UFC president Dana White in a quandary: What to do about the heavyweight division without its most marketable star and its champion???... So Dana finds the Biggest (Literally) star outside MMA and brings him into the company, and builds him up, mostly on Hype (Lesnar). And he creates an "interim HW title", and lets Antonio Rodrigo Nogiera and Tim Sylvia fight for the title, in which Nogiera submits Sylvia. Meanwhile former HW Champ Frank Mir who is attempting a comeback after a near career ending motorcycle accident, is "fed" to Brock Lesnar in Lesnar's UFC debut in February of last year. Mir didn't get the memo that he was supposed to get destroyed by Lesnar to further grease the hype machine, and he submits Lesnar in just about the only way seemingly physically possible, and thats by an ankle lock, after taking some damage early damage......
..So in steps Couture. After over a year away from the game, and still with the Original HW title strapped across his waist, he Challenges Lesnar seemingly outta the blue, instead of fighting the interim Champ Nogiera, even though Nogiera basically begged Randy to fight him after he won the interim title... Which leaves Nogiera to fight Mir, after they were opposing coaches on "The ultimate fighter" TV series.
Well, anything can happen in MMA, and that proved true. Lesnar takes advantage of a totally undeserved title shot, and TKO's Couture, and Mir shocks the world and gives Nogiera his first TKO loss of his illustrious career.... and now, here we are. Mir VS. Lesnar II. Champion VS. "Champion". The giant overbearing Beast VS. The sleek Veteran submission master
What SHOULD happen:
After the first minute of their first fight last February, two things were apparent:
1) Brock Lesnar is a freakish athlete.. and
2) Frank Mir is in Deep trouble
after the ensuing :30 seconds, two more things became apparent:
1) Brock Lesnar is a freakish athlete with Zero submission defense... and
2) Frank Mir was in deep trouble
A year and a half later, and a couple respective defining fights between both of them, two things are still apparent:
1) Brock Lesnar is a freakish athlete who is an improving fighter .... and
2) Frank Mir is in some deep muthaF***in trouble
Frank was taking the beating of a lifetime in the first fight, when referee Herb Dean stood them up after Mir took a borderline illegal punch to the back of the head, and the fight was restarted, giving Mir a much needed Mid-beatdown Cobweb clearing break. He then took a late Christmas gift when Brock presented his relatively diminutive ankle and lower leg to Mir, and was submitted. These two strokes of luck will probably not happen again. This fight should play out like the first one should have, without the interruptions or Ankle bearing gifts, with Mir taking a beating, and going for desperate Submissions. Mir, who has taken beatings by smaller, less explosive athletes, is in for a long (Or short) night. He will eat many Gorilla like punches until either the ref, his corner, his brain, or his consciousness (or lack thereof) saves him. Let the Lesnar Hype machine continue to legitimize, cause this could be a steamrolling
What MIGHT happen:
This is MMA. The only sure thing is there is no sure thing. MMA's version of Boxing's "A puncher is never out of a fight" is: "A submission master is never out of a fight". At any moment, against a normal fighter, Mir has the ability to slap on a Submission. But, facing a man whose arms look un "bar-able" and neck looks thicker than most men's beltsize, a choke or Armbar/lock submission seems impossible... So this comes down to another Leg lock, or Lesnar tiring out, and Mir wearing him down with punches. Mir has never been a great striker, so the former seems more likely, especially since its happened already. If Mir wins, it would be by another mistake by Lesnar, exposing to Mir the only relatively "Normal" sized part of his body (Pause), his lower leg
CUTman's fearless prediction:
Lesnar by mid-1st round Referee stoppage via ground and Pound Strikes. Randy Couture, take note, this all is your doing
Co-Main event:
Georges "rush" St. Pierre (WW Champ) VS. Thiago "Pitbull" Alves
Overview:
Every Superhero had it foil.
Superman had Kryptonite. Hancock had that White woman. Kobe Bryant had that White woman...
... Come to think of it, Superman had that white woman, too. I digress
Georges St. Pierre is a MMA superhero. A supreme athlete, with incredible conditioning, and with probably the most well rounded skillset in the game, and a fan friendly and humble attitude to match. He is loved, and he deserves it. St. Pierre is known for taking his opponents strengths, and using it against them, and nullifying their greatest threats. He outwrestles the wrestlers, and outbrawls the brawlers. He literally takes fighters hearts in the octagon, and has them quit on themselves.
He is also about to meet his foil. Thiago Alves is a wrecking ball. He hits harder than St. Pierre, he kicks harder than St. Pierre, he Knees harder than St. Pierre, and he will be throwing Punches, kicks and Knees AT St. Pierre with vicious brutal intent on Saturday night. Understand this: St. Pierre had NEVER, fought a guy like Pitbull Alves. He's fought great wrestlers like John Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Sean Sherk and Matt Hughes, he's fought great MMA practitioners and BJJ experts like BJ Penn and Matt Serra. But he's never fought someone who could punch or kick a hole in a redwood tree, like Alves. Vanderlei Silva, who is known for his brutal style, and fought many wars inside the ring over the years, and at Chute Box, where he trained with some of most vicious strikers in MMA history, and recently trained with Thiago Alves, had this to say about Alves:
"God, this guy can hit, for real"
Period....
This is a beautiful matchup, with ugly potential. A MMA superstar, in the prime of his career, fighting the #1 contender, also in his prime, with the skills to beat the Champ. fans are in for a treat.
What SHOULD happen:
Let's be clear. GSP is the favorite in this fight, in my opinion, based on two common opponents:
#1- Matt hughes. Both destroyed the great Hughes, by taking away his greatest strength : Takedowns. And leaving the otherwise one dimensional Hughes, to take strikes standing, and eventually putting him out
and
#2 John Fitch
GSP Dismantled John Fitch in every way imaginable... from opening bell, he outwrestled and out smarted Fitch. John Fitch was also the last fighter to beat Pitbull Alves, and it was one sided. Fitch nullified the powerful strikes of Alves and put him on his back, and basically dominated him by Ground and Pound, and TKO'd him.
GSP outwrestled John Fitch, and should he find a way to take Alves down like Fitch did, should be able to do the same. Put on a long, and sustained ground beating on him, until something gives, most likely a late round submission. He must close the distance as soon as possible, and not get into a fire fight with a man with Rockets in his gloves. If GSP is to win this fight, like he should, then it might be the same way that he beat BJ Penn, which is to smother him, and take away the striking advantage... In which case, this might just be an ugly, somewhat boring fight (Like the Penn fight was)
What MIGHT Happen:
Thiago Alves could land a punch on the same chin that Matt Serra did, who has about 1/10th the power that Pitbull does, and TKO St. Pierre, like Matt Serra did. Alves was born to hit people, hard. And if he can show similar takedown defense that he did against Hughes, then St. Pierre would have to engage Alves standing, and, that is dangerous waters for the Champ. Look for a combination of Knees, Kicks and punches to potentially put GSP on the mat.
Some fighters are destined for greatness, and Champion level success. I feel that Alves has that potential. But he is facing one of the most skilled, and smartest fighters on earth. Will Alves incredible power and vicious kicks be enough to get GSP off his gameplan, is the question. GSP has a chin that is far from granite, he's been rocked by Matt Serra, and Hurt by BJ Penn standing, and a good, measured strike from Alves is surely enough to wobble, St. Pierre, much less anyone in the sport. The question is "CAN"... can Pitbull attack GSP before GSP imposes his will on him?
CUTman's fearless prediction:
Thiago Alves by 4rd round TKO
Yea, I said it. I'm betting against a Superhero, without the benefit of a white woman.

The show should be good.
Note, Matt Serra did not land a punch on GSP's chin. Watch the fight, it was behind the ear -- back of the head with a looping punch.
GSP has way too many tools that he can use to beat Alves. I would love to see Alves win, but I predict GSP will get the takedown and tire him out.
GSP-ALves should be the best Fight of the Night. Lesnar will probably pummel Mir before the sound of the first bell. Don't forget Dan Henderson beating Bisping via decision.
