Steve McNair isn't a Hall of Famer
I know this probably isn't the best time to go here, but I had to because we all know that there's a tendency to overstate people's greatness when they pass on, especially if it's early. There was some discussion of McNair's Hall of Fame worthiness when he retired, with the verdict coming down against. Now some chatter came up again, and it needs to be said definitively that he isn't, and that the sportswriters who choose not to vote for him aren't being racist. When you look at all the metrics that we can measure him by, he come up short across the board. No rings, no eye popping stats, a .500 playoff record, and only three Pro Bowls. The only things in his favor are his MVP award in 2003 and his 30,000 passing yards, which don't mean as much as they used to (28 other quarterbacks have at least 30,000 passing yards and only half of them are or will be Hall of Famers). He was very good, often great, but he just didn't pass the necessary benchmarks to cement his case.
Bud Selig is a damn liar
Surprised? Of course not. But I had to throw this in there after the garbage I heard come out of his mouth on the radio today. This guy actually said that they couldn't just give home field advantage to the World Series participant with the better record because they wouldn't have enough time to set up hotels and what not between league championship series and the World Series itself. Hey Bud...the NBA does this EVERY FREAKING YEAR without any problem! Bud is just spinning because he has to defend the lamebrain idea of giving home field advantage to the league that wins the All Star Game. Give me a break, Bud!
Heavyweight Boxing in the U.S. is DONE
After this weekend's UFC 100 show, it dawned on me that there really isn't much incentive for Americans to get into heavyweight boxing, and that's why there are so few in there anymore. The wayward big kids who were hungry and driven but needing guidance and discipline don't get snapped up by modern day Cus D'Amatos anymore; the football and basketball coaches get to them first. And the ones who like fighting are more likely to go the MMA route. MMA is a lot safer than boxing; Frank Mir got pummeled Saturday night, but I bet he came out of there in better shape than a lot of heavyweight boxers who won their fights. There are just too many alternatives to boxing that are safer and more lucrative on average. Why stand in there and take punches to the head for 12 rounds from a 225 pounder when you can get in the cage and be finished in three? Makes sense to me.
