The 2009 New York Mets: A Closer look

The 2009 season was supposed to be one of redemption and a fulfillment of promises for the New York Mets. The signing of K-Rod was thought to be the move that put the Mets over the hump. Even playing in the same division as the World Champs from a year ago, The Philadelphia Phillies, still had many fans and pundits predicting great things for the 2009 Mets. Unfortunately, things have gone the way many would have liked. The Mets stand at 40-44 and 5.5 games back of the division lead. Let's take a look to see how the Mets have gotten to this point.

The first thing that sticks out about this team is injuries. Jose Reyes has a torn hamstring and will look to start his rehab after the All-Star break. Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran remain multiple weeks away. David Wright is battling nagging injuries to his legs and is playing at half speed. His play has dropped off incredibly because of it. With Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, John Maine, Angel Pagan, Oliver Perez, J.J. Putz, Jose Reyes and Billy Wagner all on the DL, the line-up has suffered. This has forced manager Jerry Manuel to juggle Alex Cora, Daniel Murphy, Argenis Reyes and Luis Castillo in the line-up with little success.

While on the subject of the line-up, it bears mentioning that the Mets do not have anyone playing everyday that that strikes fear in a pitcher's heart. It's bad when at the half way point your team leader in homeruns has 10. It's even worse when the leader is 40-year old Gary Sheffield. Carlos Beltran, who as mentioned before is on the DL, is second with 8. With all the injuries to the line-up this absence of power does not help.

Another issue facing this team is Citi Field. The outfield walls are ridiculously far at Citi Field, and many players have already voiced their displeasure about how big the field plays. Although that same aspect works out well for the pitchers, the Mets have had plenty long fly balls fade and die in the alleys. It seems like David Wright could easily have five or six more homers (and the team needed them) if not for the impossible dimensions in right center field. Rumor has it that the walls may be pulled in a bit after the season is over.

The final piece of this puzzle is manager Jerry Manuel. Now while the team has been hit hard by injuries, the line-up decisions that Jerry makes are puzzling at best. Jerry does not seem to grasp the concept of playing your best players, every day, every night, in the same place on the field and in the lineup. Also, he has a strange outlook on games this season. After a loss against the Yankees earlier this year, Manuel was quoted as saying: I'm satisfied that everybody else in the division lost. It's scoreboard-watching for us...

In another division, the Mets could be a dozen games back by now. But they are not. They are stuck in mediocrity at this point of the season. The team can either go up or down, but it should be an exciting season none the less. Who didn't like the Sportscenter segment, "The New York Mets Not Top Ten"?
