Now that we've said goodbye to the end of an era of mediocrity known as the Bush era and ushered in the new, you can't help but look back at the some of the greatest sports moments of 2008. Here's some that made you laugh, cry or just stare dumbfounded in disbelief. Yea Litall touched on this but as usual, but after much debating, here are MY top picks for best sports stories. Let the arguments begin............

TOP 8 SPORTS MOMENTS OF 2008

8.) Nadal Ends Federer's Reign At Wimbledon

Ok so I'll bite. Now that I've seen video clips, I've decided to kick off my second annual Top Sports Moments list with the history in the making match up between men's tennis
greats Rafeal Nadal and Roger Federer. The grueling five match showdown complete with rain delays was a testament to Nadal's toughness and tenacity and marked the end of Federer's five year reign, as Nadal was crowned Wimbledon champion.

7.)Rays Almost Sting Phillies In World Series

To the victor goes the spoils they say and while the Phillies have been named as the 2008 World Series Champions, the Rays fairytale journey into the World Series contention should definitely NOT go without notice. Just thinking about a team with a 200-1 shot at appearing in the World Series go from worst to first, beating out heavyweights New York and Boston is enough to place this moment in the Top 8 Sports Moments of 2008.

6.) Old Time Rivalry Renewed:Celtics vs Lakers
lakersvsceltics.jpg
There's something about reliving the glory days when the NBA Finals was a clash of the Titans between two juggernauts, one from the East and one from the West. Ask anyone about the Celtics vs Lakers rivalry and the names Magic vs Bird, Russell vs come to mind. During the 2008 Finals, David Stern, the media and old school fans got their wish as Kobe led Lakers faced off against the Big 3 of the Celtics composed of K.G., Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Despite the victory being favored to go to the Lakers, the defensive prowess of the Celtics proved to be too much for the Lakers and the Celtics went on to win the series in 6 games.

Any questions?

This must have been what it felt like to watch Ali, to watch Ruth, to watch that transcendent athlete that made you sit in your seat and watch in awe. I remember what it felt like to watch Michael Jordan. Jordan did things that made me get up and go in the front yard and try the things he did. He moved me; he moved us to try to be him. This is Tiger Woods.

He is the guy that right before our very eyes is moving us. He has us sitting in our seat watching in anticipation of his next miracle shot. I think we have been waiting for another athlete to take the mantle and move us like Jordan moved us. You know how Mike would make one of the reverse lay-ups where it seemed like he hung in the air for days, seemingly deciding when he would release yet another gravity defying shot? This is Tiger Woods.

Eagles out of the sand; putting shots from 50 feet out; 300 yard drives with one knee. This is Tiger Woods. The things that we want to see again that Mike had was the determination, the will, the concentration, the doing the impossible....THIS...is Tiger Woods.

As great as Lebron is, he doesn't move us like Tiger. As great as Kobe is, he doesn't move you like Tiger does. Tiger Woods is now placing himself on the Mount Rushmore of legendary athletes. He is now there along with Jordan, Ali, Gretzky, and Ruth. What I witnessed this weekend and today was a man so brilliant that he moves me. THIS...my friends, is Tiger Woods.

He is so good that we will tell our kids about him; and they will tell their kids about him. Memories of his performances will be etched in stone. He has long ago been so great that he is more than a golfer. He is bigger than the sport he plays. When the US Open began, I thought that Tiger's winning this event was near impossible, but then I remembered....THIS...is Tiger Woods.

I'm not a big golf fan, but nothing is more fun in sports than watching the best at the peak of their game. In what may have been, by far, the most difficult tournament victory in his career, Tiger once again separated himself from every golfer in the world. Woods beat Rocco Mediate, the 158th-ranked golfer in the world prior to the tournament, at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.

The most amazing aspect of the whole week was that Tiger was playing on a bum knee. You could even see him grimace on almost every drive he hit. I have never seen someone look some dominant while limping to a finish. At one point on the weekend, golf analyst Roger Maltbie asked Tiger if the pain in his left knee was getting any worse. "Yes it is," he said with a big smile.

There's absolutely no point in debating the greatness that is Tiger Woods anymore. If we weren't past that point already, Tiger took us past it in one magical week.

Memo to ESPN, Golf Channel, CBS and etc: "It's difficult to win a golf tournament and Tigger (yes, I know it is Tiger but I like calling him Tigger) Woods isn't Superman no matter how much you want him to be."

The fact that he has won 13 majors is remarkable at such a young age. But, the odds are still more likely that he will lose than win. So when I saw graphics like Tigger was 4 to 2 to win the Grand Slam of Golf, I laughed and put $100 down on his not winning the Masters and $100 on his not winning the Grand Slam. Guess who is going to the bank tomorrow? I understand that Tigger is the PGA money-maker. Let's not fool ourselves. The PGA would be an afterthought without him, but he is still much more likely to lose than win no matter how much they try to make you think otherwise.
