Recently in Plaxico Burress Category

If the "Pacman Jones Memorial Award for Moron Excellence" was a real award, then Plaxico Burress would be a lock for it in 2009. Someone needs to tell him that it isn't real, and even if it was, it's nothing that smart people want to have.

Plaxico Burress has been involved with the police at least seven times since August 2008. He's been sued at least nine times since 2000. He has gun-possession charges above his head right now. So a guy like him saying, "I know the sheriff personally," isn't exactly a good thing. All that means is, he's been involved in Plaxico's arrest enough times for them to have a deep conversation.

Yet, those are the words that he chose to throw at the Broward County Deputy Sheriff who stopped him for speeding on March 18th. I guess, in Plaxico's mind, his rapport with the sheriff is going to get that speeding ticket thrown out, because being cool with the sheriff clearly means that he can act an ass whenever he wants to. He doesn't have to obey traffic laws, which is why he's had five such violations in the past month.

I was getting my twitter on with Shaq (seriously if you aren't following me now you are missing out http://www.twitter.com/BlkSportsOnline)when I got the breaking news that Plaxico Burress was released by the New York Giants.

Before I get to my thoughts our good friend Mike Florio at ProFootBallTalk.com has some good information on what led up to Plaxico being released. It appears that the Giants offered Burress a new contract that would have kept him with the team in 2009 and resolved their grievance over bonus money. Burress balked at the deal.

Secondly Mike points out that there is a probably plea deal on the table for Plax, but he is balking at doing any time in jail and is considering taking it to trial.

A couple things are going on here. First off if you didn't know that Plaxico was a bona fide idiot you know now.

In my mind our society is backwards in a lot of ways. Many times I have stated we live in a Bizarro world where the opposite of common sense often takes place. In the sports world this is even more prevalent where announcers will do a complete 180 depending on the player (see: Wes Welker's Snow Angel vs. any Chad Johnson celebration in the past five years). Our justice system also seems to live by Bizarro rules from time to time and very often they collide with the sports world. So without further ado I give you the case of:

What I am going to do is present to you the general facts of each situation and then we will talk about what should happen if we lived in a common sense world and what will happen in Bizarro world. We will start with Plaxico Burress.

Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress had a very rough 2008. Several disciplinary issues with the Giants which led to a suspension and a benching. A couple of domestic disputes where the police had to come to his residence but nothing serious enough to file charges. Also some legal issues with a damage rental car. Not Pacman Jones type of drama, but enough to make you wonder where Plaxico's head is at sometimes.
One night Plaxico and teammate Antonio Pierce went to make it rain in the club. Plaxico doing his best Three Stooges impersonation accidently shoots himself in the leg. Next thing you know we have assumed hospital names, a possible hidden gun and an indictment on illegal gun possession charges.

The mayor is on TV stating how Burress should be prosecuted to the highest extent of the law. I guess innocent until proven guilty just flew out the window.

These charges carry a minimum sentence of three and half years in prison.

Now lets talk about Marvin Harrison.

The New York Post and Newsday both reported that on Wednesday police took a small amount of weapons and ammunition. It was reported that a 9-mm handgun, a rifle and ammunition for three other guns - a .380, a .45 and a .40, the same caliber of gun Burress accidentally shot himself with - were seized during the execution of a search warrant at Burress' home in Totowa.

It wasn't immediately known if the weapons were registered or not. On the off chance that the weapons are unregistered, Burress could face more charges in New Jersey in addition to the two felony gun-possession charges he was given following his accidental shooting at a Manhattan nightclub last month.

Unless you've been under a rock you've heard about the Plaxico Burress situation. He was up in the club with a tool and accidentally shot himself in the leg. I'll throw in the obligatory... allegedly. Love that word in these situations. If you just get the energy and the feeling of how the media is reporting this you would have thought this man was a cold-blooded unruly criminal. He's actually just a athlete who's had some issues with his team, been fined for those issues and probably has been a big headache for the New York Giants - not society. It kills me how they prviously took the man to task because of the obvious domestic issue he had going on earlier in the season when he said he had to take his kid to school, which really meant it was none of our business what happened. You got the sense some in the Media wanted to warm up the get-Burress-out-of-town car back then.

Look, Burress shot himself on some idiotic Cheddar-Bob stuff, didn't shoot another person and right now could only be accused being a pain in the ass to the NYG's, having bad judgement and making a bad decision. Some already have the man banned from the league, kicked off the team and put in jail with no key. Whatever the Giants do with Burress is their decision and up to them but let the thing play out before you banish the man from the human society. It's obviously it wasn't a good move to take his gun with him to the club, and it definitely wouldn't have hurt to have at least one security guard which could have legally protected Plax. But if he's going to be judged by the mainstream then lets play by the mainstreams bogus rules and let the legal system play itself out before riding shotgun in the car that the media is driving. I mean who really thinks it's fair for a first time offender with no criminal record to be facing 7 years of jail time for this while these politicians steal millions and get bailed out?

Understand i'm not saying that he's not a knucklehead and needs some re-wiring but up until this incident you could make the case for all his other so called distractions being dumb stuff, that's between him and his employer. But because the Media already had the machine rolling the perception is that this gun situation is a regular occurence for the guy and that he did it again feeling. I agree with a lot that has been said as far as being a distractions and surely he has to face possible reprecussions but at the sametime I have no reason to call him a bad guy, a criminal and render his life now useless. I think that's a bunch of garbage.

I understand the mandatory sentence for carrying an illegal handgun in New York is 3 ½ years. I also understand that too many people are injured and even killed by people possessing guns. As a whole I think the amount of guns in our country licensed or not is one of the reasons we are such a violent society and why we have some much crime. I think it is one of the reasons we have so many young people die well before their time. I truly wish we had better gun control laws.

Now with that being said it would be ridiculous if Plaxico Burress had to spend 3 ½ years in prison for shooting himself. I know people who haven't spent 3 years in prison for shooting other people much less shooting themselves.

The trouble-plagued NFL star blasted himself through his right thigh just after midnight near the VIP entrance to the LQ nightclub on Lexington Avenue and had to be hospitalized, sources said.

She then told the officers she needed to get dressed and asked them to wait. After more than 30 minutes, the cops left. They returned shortly before 8 p.m. but there was no answer.
