Allen Iverson’s fake retirement didn’t even last a week. In reality it was either:
A- Pouting on AI’s part because nobody wanted him.
or
B- A brilliant strategy to build interest in him.
Whatever the case he was hoping for one team to take interest and that team appears to be the Philadelphia 76ers.
It is sort of a “blah” move. Iverson will probably get his wish to start (he has a little more experience than Jrue Holiday) and he will have the option to shoot 500 times a game, but it won’t make the Sixers more than fringe playoff contenders (only because the bottom half of the east is so weak).
From the 76ers I believe it is more of a PR Tmove if they could they would probably bill it as:
COME WATCH FOR MAYBE THE LAST TIME THE GREAT ALLEN IVERSON
Unless Iverson does something crazy with his demands the deal will be done soon and he should be in uniform by Monday.
So in the end the “retirement” worked out the exact same way I predicted. As soon as someone called AI came running.
Nothing to get excited for, because in the end AI chose a last chance for individual glory over possible team success and when he finally does retire I hope that decision doesn’t haunt him.
*Update*
There is a one year offer on the table for AI that he is prepared to sign this evening.
