When I said that the new NFL Overtime rules were passed mainly because of what happened in the Saints vs. Vikings NFC Championship game, some people thought I was just making that up.
Never underestimate the Power of Brett Favre and someone who agrees with me is Saints Middle Linebacker Jonathan Vilma. Here is what he had to say about the new OT rules:
“If you read between the lines, we feel like they’re saying well, if Minnesota would have had a possession who knows what would have happened,” said Vilma. “We don’t appreciate that. I don’t appreciate it at all.”
“Whoever scores wins,” he said. “It’s up to Minnesota to stop us. They didn’t stop us on fourth downs and that’s their problem. I just feel like they’re slighting us, but it is what it is.”
For the record I like the new overtime rules. I think it encourages bold play and you know the Football Gods favor the bold.
But Vilma is correct and incorrect in his statement. I don’t think the NFL is saying if Favre got another chance he would lead the Vikings down to a winning a TD (it is as likely he would throw another interception). But the NFL does want a team to have that chance because it adds to the drama.
It doesn’t cheapen the Saints Super Bowl victory. They beat the NFC West champion, the NFC north champion and the AFC champion. They beat Kurt Warner, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning. There is nothing cheap about that accomplishment.
