St. Louis Rams rookie and 4th round pick Mardy Gilyard was robbed at gunpoint last night around 9:30 p.m near the University of Cincinnati. Stolen from him was a $500 necklace and $90 in cash. WLWT reports that Gilyard was walking with another man just after 9:30 p.m. when two men approached, one holding a gun.
Also, let me say no one was hurt and the police have yet to make any arrests. I am not really a black helicopter conspiracy guy but I would not rule out this being a set-up. I don’t think you see former star players robbed near their former college campuses for the simple fact that the respect level is so high for them in that area.
Gilyard, who I think was the best WR is this last draft and not Dez “I play great against Rice but not Oklahoma” Bryant, will be ok once he signs that first contract. However, this is how athletes feel they need to protect themselves and carry guns. This is also the type of situation that leads to incidents like Plaxico Burress found himself in.
This whole thing could have been random, and it might not have been. Athletes know they are targets and will continue to to protect themselves accordingly. Mixing in a few days of no “bling” could be a start.
