To be blunt, the NFL salary structure is not beneficial to the players (unless you are JaMarcus Russell).
But here are the facts: the players’ association agreed to this deal, so when you sign a contract, you need to live up to it.
If you don’t want to participate in the “voluntary” offseason program and camp, that is fine. If you want to hold out during training camp, that is your right. If you want to sit out the entire season on principle, more power to you.
But if you are going to show up, don’t be a “moist dude” about it like Darrelle Revis. SI.com has the details:
The New York Jets’ All-Pro cornerback sat out some plays during practice Monday in protest of his stalled negotiations after initially saying he was wasn’t feeling well.
“I was just a little lightheaded today, a hamstring pull, too,” Revis said with a chuckle. “Nah, we’re going through it right now. There’s some things right now and we’re starting to get serious. There’s two different opinions going on, and I’m going to do what’s best for me and my family.”
Revis promised last week he would participate in the team’s mandatory minicamp beginning Monday. But toward the end of the first practice, he told defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman his head was bothering him and went to the sideline.
“It was something just to let them know I can play, and I cannot play,” Revis said. “That’s what it is.”
“You sit here and you tell guys, ‘You’re the best player in the league, you’re our No. 1 priority,’ and you’re not showing loyalty in terms of keeping your core guys here and wanting to keep them here for the future,” Revis said. “If you want to build a dynasty, you’ve got to start being loyal to some of your players who are loyal to you on the field and play the best football they can.”
Ryan said he would talk with Revis about the situation, and added that the contract issue would not be a distraction for the team.
“If his situation is that he’s got something on his mind and he’s not focused 100 percent, then I really don’t want him out there,” Ryan said. “We practice hard. We go full speed. If that focus isn’t there, then I don’t want to put anybody in jeopardy.”
Revis is currently suffering from:
OUT OF CONTROL EGO DISEASE
He has everyone telling him how great he is, and he is turning into a diva. Is he underpaid? Yes.
Is he going about it like a spoiled child who is mad they just got one Barbie as opposed to the Malibu Barbie pool set? Absolutely.
Don’t show up if you are going to act like a baby.
Go home and tell yourself how great you are, because you aren’t helping your team by faking injuries to get out of practice to prove a point.
If Terrell Owens did that, it would be the top story on Sportscenter, and everyone would be jumping down his throat. When Brandon Marshall was acting like a baby at practice, he was crucified.
The rules shouldn’t be different for Revis because the media sees him as a “Good Guy.” It is weak and says you are more interested in yourself than your team.
Yes, Revis is a very good corner, but he has only had one year at an elite level. You want to prove you are the next Deion Sanders, then go out there and do it on the field again.
Don’t be this guy, because it isn’t a good look.
