A source close to site negotiations has informed the LAtimes.com that the Manny Pacquiao – Antonio Margarito fight will be in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas,TX. Margarito is currently stripped of his California boxing license and will appear before the California State Athletic Commission Wednesday to regain his license. Margarito lost his license in February 2009 when state authorities confiscated plaster inserts from inside his hand wrap before a title defense the previous month against Shane Mosley at Staples Center. If he can gain his license in California, then it will more than likely get his license in Texas.
Pacquiao’s U.S. business manager, Michael Koncz, met with representatives of a fight location in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, but the source close to the site negotiations said the offer from Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was deemed more impressive.
Pacquiao fought Joshua Clottey, a virtual unknown at Cowboys Stadium in March this year and drew 50,000 fans. A Pacquiao-Margarito card would stand to draw much, much more.
It will be interesting to see what the California State Athletic Commission decides, Margarito’s camp contends he was unaware of the substance in his gloves and that he’s spent enough time away from the sport.
If it’s in Cowboys Stadium, sign me up, I’m there.
