I like to use analogies, metaphors and creative sayings.
But there are certain things you will never hear me “joke” about. No slavery analogies, no World Trade analogies, no war or death analogies.
Some things just aren’t funny no matter how creative you think they may be.
So when former Chicago Bear Dan Hampton says the Vikings need to hit the Saints like Katrina, I know what he was going for, but it that doesn’t matter.
You just have to be smarter.
I am not a high horser, I am not going to call for Hampton to be fired or anything like that. We all have said things we immediately wish would could take back. To my understanding Hampton doesn’t have a history of saying insensitive type of things on air (fell free to correct me if I am wrong).
The lesson to be learned here is in 2010 everything you say and/or write is going to be subject to scrutiny and I think that is a good thing.
The media needs to be held accountable.
Just like athletes, media personalities need to understand that have a standard they need to live up to. Hampton is lucky he isn’t on a bigger stage or he would be looking for new job.
Hopefully Hampton has learned his lesson. I know he has apologized and that is good enough for me, but just be careful in how you use your words because they are more powerful than you think.
