A lot of people just remember the National Championship where Reggie Bush had a very good game and Vince Young had a “legendary” game. That is where all the talk about how Vince Young should have won the Heisman comes from.
But similar to the NFL MVP award, the Heisman is a regular season award and Reggie Bush was a clear cut winner, but people have short memories.
While I don’t agree with Young saying he would take the trophy if they offered, at least he recognizes that Bush won the trophy on the field, fair and square. Here are Young’s quote:
“I definitely want it, I definitely want it,” said Young, who was runner-up for the Heisman that year, when he guided Texas to the national championship. “But he won it fair and square definitely, and it’s much respect to Reggie, man. He had a great career and he’s already won a Super Bowl before me. I’m already mad about that.
“But at the same time I am definitely happy for him, man, and he is definitely the Heisman Trophy winner for that year. But if they send it over to me I am not going to say no to it.”
I can only speak for myself in saying I would never want a hand me down trophy unless the athlete in question was cheating with something that enhanced his performance on the field.
Since none of the things that Bush is accused of had anything to do with his on the field performance I would not accept even if I came in second.
But that is just me.
