Week 4 in the NCAA is in the bag. Let’s take a look at my winners and losers of this past weekend.
Stand Up award winners
Terrelle Pryor – Look at this stat line; 20-26 for 224 yards and 4 TD, 7 rushes for 104 yards and a TD, and 1 reception for 20 yards for a TD. With Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson going down with an injury against Bowling Green, Pryor may have started to distance himself in the race for the Heisman trophy and perhaps making a case for the Number 1 pick in April’s NFL draft.
Mark Ingram and Alabama Crimson Tide – Down 20-7 in the third quarter to the 12th ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, the Crimson Tide didn’t panic. They simply handed the ball of to their Heisman winner and let him go to work. When the Crimson Tide got a late turnover and needed a go ahead score, Mark Ingram (24-157-2 TD) got the ball and didn’t let it go. He scored on a 1 yard TD run to beat the Razorbacks. Mark Ingram is making a strong case for a 2nd Heisman, and if Ohio State and Alabama continue to win out and meet for the National championship game, the Heisman committee will definitely have to reconsider voting for the Heisman until AFTER the season is over.
Cam Newton and Auburn Tigers – Lost in the shadows of the Alabama Arkansas game was another big SEC showdown between Auburn and South Carolina. Cam Newton threw for 2 TD and ran for 3 more as the Tigers stormed back to beat the Gamecocks. Cam Newton took over the game and South Carolina couldn’t adjust. I wonder how many Florida fans are looking at Cam Newton and thinking of what they could have had after Sir Tebow left.
BONUS AWARD – Tennessee State University got of the hook by beating Florida A&M University in the 20th annual Atlanta Football Classic. FAMU and TSU have played against one another in this annual game since 1998. FAMU had won 10 of the previous 12 meetings before TSU won. TSU was paced by Preston Brown who rushed for 233 yards! The win by the Tigers evened the series between the schools at 25-25-1.
SIT DOWN
Texas Longhorns – Mack Brown, are you sure you want to keep coaching this team? Sure you aren’t ready to give up the reigns to Will Muschamp? Texas was BLASTED by the UCLA Bruins 34-12 and it wasn’t even that close. Perhaps Texas was looking ahead to the “Red River Shootout” against Oklahoma? Whatever the case may be, Texas better get ready, Oklahoma is looking for revenge.
Mark Richt and UGA – Oh, how the mighty have fallen! UGA lost to the Mississippi State Bulldogs and have started 0-3 in conference play for the first time since 1993. It once seemed that Mark Richt was an untouchable head coach and that no matter what happened, he would never be on the hot seat. Well, if you listen to UGA fans on sports talk radio stations around the country, Richt is not only on the hot seat, but many are clamoring for him to be fired. It’s going to be hard to fire Richt as UGA hired a new Athletic director after Damon Evans “resigned.” UGA has a chance to turn their season around as the dynamic A.J. Green returns from suspension, and can perhaps help the Bulldogs turn this season around.
