Before I get to my thoughts, here is the complete Kevin Garnett statement:
“I am aware there was a major miscommunication regarding something I said on the court last night.
“My comment to Charlie Villanueva was in fact ‘You are cancerous to your team and our league.’
“I would never be insensitive to the brave struggle that cancer patients endure. I have lost loved ones to this deadly disease and have a family member currently undergoing treatment.
“I would never say anything that distasteful. The game of life is far bigger than the game of basketball.”
Very nicely written by Garnett’s PR person, but it’s too bad I don’t believe him. How is Charlie Villanueva cancerous to the league? Who does KG think he is fooling?
I have been to numerous NBA games including several Celtics games. Garnett has one of the most foul mouths in the NBA, and that is no secret.
To assume he was composed enough to put together that intelligent of a sentence when trash talking to Villanueva is absurd.
Or if KG was saying it, it would be asinine.
Some people think all is fair when it comes to trash talking, but I disagree. Trash talking is part of the game but when you are talking about a deadly disease like cancer, you have crossed a line.
I believe Villanueva and KG by lying only makes himself look bad. You have to man up and own it— don’t hide behind your PR people who are whispering in his ear:
“Under no circumstances can you admit to this.”
No one is perfect— we all say stupid things we wish we could take back in the heat of the moment. Either be a man and say that is how you feel about Villanueva or apologize for making a insensitive remark.
All KG confirmed is what Villanueva said. He has a lot of bark but little bite.
