The rumor about this proposed bout, not surprisingly sprang up during the weekend of the Pacquiao vs. Mosley fight. Unlike other alleged Mayweather opponents this does seem to have some legs to it.
Considering that Mayweather and Pacquiao can’t seem to agree on terms to fight each other, this is an acceptable fight for the time being. Much better than the debacle we all saw Saturday night in Vegas.
Here are a few details that we have.
According to Boxrec.com, Floyd Mayweather Jr will return to the ring this autumn, fighting in the Cowboys Stadium in September against newly crowned WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz.
So far Ortiz is the only party to comment on the fight, although talking to KUSports admitted that the deal is not yet completely finalized:
“I just need to look at the contract and make sure everything is OK. It’s not 100 percent sure yet, but that’s what I’m setting my sights on.”
From a business sense it is a good move for Mayweather. Ortiz is young and coming off an outstanding upset win over Andre Berto and would have a strong following in Dallas. Considering Pacquiao last few opponents, people will see it as Mayweather taking on a live dog, as oppose to a tailor made or over the hill opponent.
With that being said as long as Mayweather skill set is in tact, no way Ortiz has a chance. You never know how these long layoffs will effect Mayweather, but Ortiz isn’t enough of a skill boxer to cause a serious threat to Mayweather.
Mayweather also has several cases pending against him in Vegas, even though I have been told he will plea to many of them and no serve any jail time.
The question begs will we ever get Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.
If it happens it happens I am definitely not counting on it.
