With the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, the hate has been turned up to an all-time high, with LeBron James remaining squarely in the cross-hairs. The latest person to take aim is James’ former teammate and close friend Daniel “Boobie” Gibson.
Gibson is doing a weekly podcast with The Dugout Sports Show during the NBA playoffs and in the latest edition, he had some choice things to say about LeBron’s recent comments that he went to Miami in order “to team up with some guys that would never die down in the moment.”
“I take comments like that and when you speak out and you feel the need for everybody to hear what you are saying, it’s kind of like admission. By you saying that, I don’t think great players should feel the need to say this about a team or say that about a team. I think what it all boils down to if you’re great, you go play great, be great and everybody will realize you’re great. And you wouldn’t have to let it be known that everybody else was less great. Great players shouldn’t have to do that. So I feel like it’s kind of an admission. He might have needed some help. He might have needed to go somewhere and find someone who is a little greater so maybe he wouldn’t die down in those moments.”
I get Gibson (and any of LeBron’s other former teammates) still having the redass over their meal ticket leaving for greener pastures. And yet again, LeBron probably could have found a more diplomatic way to express his feelings, but watching the fourth quarter of Game One should have been proof enough that James found what he was looking for. Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh stepped up in the final period the way LeBron’s teammates in Cleveland rarely did in their playoff defeats.
LeBron’s greatness as an individual player was never in doubt – two MVPs, a scoring title and seven All-Star appearances speak to that. But winning championships takes a team effort and whether is was Gibson, Mo Williams or anyone else, no one ever stepped up to to provide the necessary support to win a ring.
