For the most part, Prince Fielder enjoyed his 2011 All-Star getaway in Arizona. Between participating in the Home Run Derby and actually winning the MVP of the All-Star game, you would think that the Milwaukee Brewers slugger would love to re-live his Arizona experience over and over again. However, the Fielder and his family weren’t so well received by the Arizona contingent.
According to Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports, the Arizona fans, apparently still bitter about their hometown slugger Justin Upton not participating in the Home Run Derby, threw water at Fielder and his family as they rode through the red carpet during the pre-All Star game festivities.
Booing the guy as he comes up to bat? Okay, that’s one thing ..
Booing any other of his All-Star Brewer teammates (such as Rickie Weeks) as they come up to bat? That’s fine too ..
But to throw water at a man’s wife and children is simply disrespectful and there is no excuse for such behavior. At times, emotions get high in sports but there’s always a line that has to be drawn somewhere.
If anything, those fans that hurled the water at Fielder should actually be the same ones thanking him. His heroics in the All-Star game propelled the National League to victory and homefield advantage in the World Series. The Arizona Diamondbacks currently stand three games out of first place in the NL West trailing only the San Francisco Giants, the defending World Champs.
Should the Diamondbacks find their way to the World Series, they would own homefield advantage and Game 1 would be played at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona — all thanks to Prince Fielder.
Yet, they would rather disrespect him..
Stay Classy Arizona
