In a move that surprised absolutely no one, but is a head-scratcher nonetheless, the Big East has announced the additions of five new teams to their conference starting with the 2013 football season. The big catch in this move is the addition of Boise State, who, along with San Diego State, will be joining the conference for football only. The other three schools, SMU, Houston , and Central Florida, will all become full-participants in the conference.
This move was an obvious money grab by the Big East as a last ditch effort to try and maintain their BCS automatic qualifier status. The move makes absolutely zero sense geographically with the conference now having teams in all four North American time zones.
While the conference does stand to benefit overall, the big winner in this could be Boise State, who now has greater control over their future BCS bowl eligibility. The move could also be enough to keep coach Chris Petersen from bolting for greener pastures, not that it will make him feel any better about the broken system, but at least now his team will only have their on-field performance to blame for any future snubs.
