We live in a day and time where saying outlandish things and “Trolling” are the route individuals take to gain themselves some attention.
It’s sad when shock and awe is more valuable than ethics and quality.
Yesterday Sporting News columnist David Whitley wrote a scathing piece about Kaepernick that focused on his tattoo’s and essentially how quarterbacks are choir boys and shouldn’t have them.
Some of the quotes from the article border on racial epitopes.
Whitley: “For dinosaurs like me, NFL quarterbacks were our little Dutch boys,” Whitley wrote. “The original hero stuck his finger in the dyke to save Holland. Pro QBs were the last line of defense against the raging sea of ink. When our kids said they wanted a tattoo, we could always point to the Manning brothers.”
Whitley’s column was borderline insane and should have gotten no attention.
To assess that Michael Vick or any other black quarterback is not CEO material because they have tats is outrageous.
Whitley’s ridiculous column made its way to Kaepernick’s parents, and it’s suffice to say, they are not pleased.
“It annoyed me,” Teresa Kaepernick told Robert Klemko of USA Today. “You are categorizing this kid on something like tattoos? Really? Saying other guys are role models because they don’t have them? Really? Some of these other guys don’t have crystal clear reputations. That’s how you’re going to define this kid? It’s pretty irritating, but it is what it is.”
“Colin’s a fairly religious kid, but he’s not in your face about it,” Rick said by phone. “It’s more about him and what he believes.”
“This guy has probably never talked to Colin,” Rick said. “Instead of saying that Colin does all these great things and donates his time to children, this guy is going to make him out like a gangster. Really? I guess you just have to roll with the punches.
“Somebody asked me if I got mad about that. I said no. It’s just a guy and his opinion. I could have an opinion about him, but I’ve never met the guy, so I don’t know if my opinion would be right.”
“In high school he did a big paper on substance abuse,” Teresa said. “He’s truly disgusted by it. He just has issues with it. He’s so careful about what he puts in his body. He feels that it’s his temple.”
“You give them one grain, and then they’re flocking all over,” Teresa said.
Whitley assertion is terrible, and again the fact that he is receiving so much attention is disturbing.
Kaepernick has a college degree and a 4.0 student, so two arms full of tattoo’s means he can never be a CEO.
If you saw him a suit and tie, you would never know.
I’m sure David Whitley can write and cover so many other things besides how many tattoo’s the hottest quarterback in football has on his arms.
