The 6-1 Knicks are starting to look and act more and more like the Knicks of the 1990s. Maybe that’s the reason the team brought in veterans like Rasheed Wallace, Kurt Thomas, Jason Kidd, and Marcus Camby. Check out this dust-up between Knicks’ guard J.R. Smith and Grizzlies’ guard Jerryd Bayless from last night’s 105-95 Grizzlies win via ProBasketballTalk.com:

Here’s what Smith had to say about the exchange courtesy of Marc Berman of the New York Post:
“Other than me trying to get the ball, I don’t know what he could’ve been mad at,’’ Smith said after the Knicks’ 105-95 loss to the Grizzlies, their first defeat of the season. “Some small guards have a little man’s complex. They got to work that out.’’
“I was extremely shocked,’’ Smith said. “I definitely didn’t think it was a flagrant. They said I wound up and swung at him. I definitely was going for the ball. They didn’t see it that way. Hopefully they’ll take a review on it.’’
Personally I think that J.R. Smith would have got best of Jerryd Bayless if this one had not been broken up before it started, but at least Bayless showed a little grit. As for J.R. Smith’s comments on what happened, all I can say is that somewhere Charles Oakley and Anthony Mason are proud.
