Derek Jeter May Start Season In the Minors

New York Yankees v/s Baltimore Orioles 08/31/09

The Yankees are bracing for the idea of Derek Jeter possibly starting the season on the disabled list after he experienced soreness in his surgically repaired ankle.

As reported by Newsday  as of now Jeter is slated to return to the field Friday for workout, in order to gauge whether or not he’ll be ready to go for Opening Day. The always optimistic Jeter stated the following:

“I wouldn’t call it a setback,…It’s what’s supposed to happen, from what I’ve been told. Even the last couple days when I talked to the doc, he said it’s supposed to happen. It’s all normal. Everything’s fine. Ligaments, the bone, everything’s perfect. It’s just that’s what happens after you have surgery.”

But just in case the team captain is not ready to start for Opening Day the Yankees have arranged for him to do a minor league stint, which would cause him to miss the first 4 games of the season, before being eligible to return on April 6.

As of now, Jeter’s fate for the opening of the season remains a waiting game dependent on how Jeter feels. There remains just two weeks before game one for Jeter to get as close to 100% as possible.

The Yankees have also discussed the possibility of Jeter being the designated hitter to open the season, with Eduardo Nunez playing shortstop. Either way this is a very hobbled and old Yankees starting roster to enter 2013.
