The Atlanta Falcons were gashed by the read option several times last season. Cam Newton had two of his best games last season in the offense.
The 49ers and Colin Kaepernick stormed back against the Falcons in the NFC Championship game using the offense. The Falcons are tired of being dominated by the offense, and have chosen to do something about it.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that the Falcons staff traveled to Clemson to visit with head coach Dabo Swinney. The agenda was simple, help us figure out how to stop the read option.
“[The Falcons] are trying to learn more about what we do and how we defend what we do,” Swinney told the media on Monday. “Yet, we were able to take a lot from them as well. I’d be surprised if there’s an NFL team that hasn’t gone and spent time with college coaches this offseason.”
Head coach Mike Smith guaranteed that the Falcons coaching staff would spend an enormous amount of time figuring out how to stop the lethal offense.
I know that our coaching staff is going to spend a whole lot of time on it because it could be the wave of the future,” Smith said. “I’m not saying that it will be, but that it could be.”
“It’s something that we want to make sure that we have a very good understanding of,” Smith said.
