Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers is one of the best coaches in the NBA. Despite the loss of star point guard Rajon Rondo to a torn ACL earlier this season, Rivers has kept the Celtics ship afloat and has the team positioned for a playoff berth.
But when it comes to the playoffs, match-ups are key. Despite traditionally having success against the Miami Heat, or more success than any other team, Rivers had a very interesting quote when asked about matching up with LeBron & co. in the playoffs.
So, Rivers is actually admitting he wants avoid the Heat?
“Of course we would,” Rivers admitted when asked that very question. “But if we play them, we’ll be ready. But of course we would. Listen, I’m not that dumb. I’m not the brightest guy but come on. Really, you would love to avoid anyone [like Miami]. Listen, no matter who we play, we’re going to play a tough team. It’s going to be New York, Indiana or Miami. There’s no cakewalk for us. It’s going to be hard.”
I can always appreciate honesty, so props to Rivers for being upfront about his mindset when it comes to the Heat.
If they do happen to end up matched with the Heat, I feel safe saying the Celtics wouldn’t go down without a fight. Don’t forget, last year they took the Heat to the brink with a 7-game Eastern Conference Finals.
