The Arizona Cardinals new regime is off to a great start in their dealings with Tyrann Mathieu. Many people thought Mathieu might play corner where he would be responsible for covering a lot of good receivers in the league.
Pro Football Talk is reporting that the Cardinals and head coach Bruce Arians instead will play Mathieu at free safety where they can immediately take advantage of his playmaking abilities.
As a free safety, Mathieu will be responsible for covering the deep third of the field, mostly on the side opposite Patrick Peterson.
Peterson is one of the few corners in the league that you can leave all by himself and know he’ll win most of his matchups. Mathieu may not be that tall, but he does possess great instincts in the passing game, tenacity in coverage, amazing balls skills, and he knows where to be at all times.
If Mathieu can stay focused on football and learn his craft, I truly think he’ll be an All Pro at the position.
