Conference Recap By The Numbers: Week 1

manziel money

Every week, I will be taking a look at the week that was in college football by the numbers to explain the action and what caught my eye. And here we..go.

AAC

 Ohio v Louisville

2: The number of FBS teams that beat AAC teams. UConn lost to Towson at home 33-18 and South Florida got routed by NcNeese State at home, 53-12. If you didn’t know, major conference teams will often pay FBS opponents to play them and $675,000 is the amount those two schools were paid to embarrass their opponents. 103: The amount of point Rutgers and Fresno State combined for in a 52-51 overtime thriller that Fresno State won. Derek Carr (yes David Carr’s little brother) went 52-73 for 456 yards and 5 TDs. Expect to hear his name called in next years NFL Draft. 240.4: That was Teddy Bridgewater’s QB rating this Saturday against Ohio. Bridgewater’s Heisman run got off to a great start when he completed 82.1% of his passes for 355 yards and 5 touchdowns. The competition will be questions for Louisville this season but consistent performances close to this and Teddy will be in New York after the season.

ACC

jameis winston

70: The amount of points Georgia Tech hung on Elon. Quick if anyone can tell me Elon’s mascot or where it’s located, you’ll win a coupon to the finest chicken in waffles in Atlanta. Georgia Tech should be ashamed of playing Elon but hey it’s better to beat them down than to pay them and lose to them. 45: The number of points Duke won by (45-0) against “NC Central.” 92.6. Jameis Winston’s completion percentage, which is a new Florida State record in a single game. Winston might already be the breakout star of the season who lives up to the hype. Something tells me he isn’t done setting records. 1: Program changing victory for Clemson if they don’t have a let down at some point during the season. Wins like this could propel them on a National Championship game run. 186: The amount of rushing yards by Miami RB Duke Johnson, Not a lot of people know his name now nationally, but everyone will know the speedster by the end of the year.

Big 12

2: Just like the AAC, the Big 12 had a couple teams go down to FBS opponents. Iowa State went down to Northern Iowa 28-20 and Kansas State lost 24-21 to NDSU. Those teams made a combined $700,000 to pull the upset. North Dakota State to it’s credit is a two time defending champ and they also have the same number of wins against FCS opponents since 2010 as Kansas which is 4. 413: The number of passing yards for true freshman walk on Baker Mayfield had for Texas Tech against SMU. To go from walking on to a Big 12 school and then becoming the starting QB is one thing, having a game that wins you the Big 12 offensive player of the week is another. Well done.

Big Ten

kirk ferentz

602: Total yards given up by Nebraska to Wyoming. In fact, 1831: Thats the amount of yards Bo Pelini and company have given up in their last three games going back to last year. Southern Miss doesn’t figure to be much of a threat but Sept 14th looms large and UCLA will not be fun for Husker fans if the defense isn’t improved. 2: The amount of two-point conversions Ohio State attempted and converted against Buffalo. Urban Meyer just had to give opponents something else to think about huh? 73: Points put up by Indiana. Yes Indiana football not basketball against Larry Bird’s alma mater Indiana State. $250,000: Thats how much Iowa would have to pay Kirk Ferentz per month until 2020 if they fire him. Considering they lost to Northern Illinois this Saturday, they may be on the phone with Kirk’s agent (who just might be the best agent in sports)

Pac 12

Oregon Infographic

$450,000: The amount #25 Oregon State paid Eastern Washington to beat them this weekend. 66: How many points Oregon ran up against Nichols(see info graphic above). 337: Total yards for Heisman darkhorse Brett Hundley, QB from UCLA put up this weekend in a romp of Nevada. 32: How many points Washington beat Boise State by. Is this the year that HC Steve Sarkisian makes a run at the Pac-12 title? They handed Boise State their worst loss under Chris Petersen. 2: The amount of QBs that went a combined 15/29 for 172 yards, 1 TD/1 INT for USC. They beat Hawaii behind the play of their defense which only allowed 217 yards but there is no way USC competes for the conference with QB play like that.

SEC

0: The amount of sacks or Jadeveon Clowney Thursday vs North Carolina. Clowney said he has stomach virus and it looked like he was gassed in the heat. It might be best for Clowney to slip off the radar then come back strong because the backlash is high right now. 31: Amount of points Texas A&M gave up to Rice, even though they were missing six starters on defense. 50%: The percentage of Johnny Football completed passes that went for touchdowns. He completed six and three went for TDs. Yes he also had one unsportsmanlike penalty, one run in with his coach, one autograph troll job, and multiple money celebrations. 19%: Completion percentage of Logan Thomas vs Alabama’s defense on a day where Bama’s offense looked beatable. 1: Game of the week, between Ole Miss and Vandy. This one was back and forth with 2 lead changes in the final 1:30. Everyone got to see why Ole Miss went so hard after all those big time freshman and they made the difference in the 39-35 win.
