Jon Jones is the number one ranked MMA fighter in the world but for him that is nowhere near enough. For only being 26 years old Jones has an amazing grasp on his legacy and he is well aware what lies ahead of him if he is victorious at UFC 165.
Jones spoke to Jim Rome and had this to say about his next fee fights in the UFC:
“My biggest goal is to accomplish this record of seven title defenses,” he said. “But after that, I’m here for the fans. I’m an entertainer, and if (the fans) want to see me against a certain heavyweight, I’ll talk to my team and my coaching staff and see if it makes sense to us. But I’m predicting either Glover Teixeira or some interesting superfights for the fans.”
The record for consecutive defenses, the Superfights, and all of the groundbreaking endorsements all depend on this weekends outcome. The loss by Anderson Silva opened the door for Jones to be the face for the UFC and companies have begun looking at him as such; Gatorade just inked Jones to an endorsement deal.
Jones has the opportunity to gain mainstream notoriety in a sport that’s often perceived as brutal and underground.
His ability in the ring to dominate at Light Heavyweight and add enough mass to fight the elite in the Heavyweight division makes him a rarity in MMA. A Bone Jones vs Junior Dos Santos fight would have fans salivating.
All of these hypotheticals can become reality as long as Jonny Bones takes care of the dangerous Alexander Gustafsson. The 15-1 fighter’s only loss came to Phil Davis who is similar to Jones in size and stature.
If Jones is focused he should walk away victorious in this fight and engrained his name amongst the best fighters to ever compete in MMA. All of this at the age of 26… Not bad I’d say.
